  • Auto cut problem help please.

For the first time I tried the auto feed function on my sp300v. The result was a failure. I tried to print then laminate and then get my machine to cut using the the auto feed function (I think that’s what its called) so the sp300 detects the reg marks and aligns the cutting for precision. Problem was the machine just could not detect the reg marks which was done in Versaworks. I tried this several times and all i get is the printhead trying to detect the marks by slowly moving in to the media and trying to detect but then an error message comes up stating that it can’t detect the marks. Anything I’m doing wrong here??

    Help appreciated

    🙁

I’m assuming that when you first align the cutting head you are remembering to press the "basepoint" button?

Assuming you have, then It’s alignment that’s the problem.

Try positioning the vinyl so that the circles are almost behind the position of the knife. I reckon when they programmed the software they tried to allow for perspective and over compensated. As a result the head is only correctly aligned when it is slightly in front of the registration markers. This takes trial and error to establish the correct positioning

will give it another bash phill. does it matter about the amount of vinyl left in front of the reg marks if you know what i mean?? if i remember correctly the manual mentioned about leaving margins which i didnt really understand.

    cheers 🙄

When you first print complete with registration marks you must wind the vinyl forward before cutting it to leave 3 or 4 inches of vinyl behind the rear registration markers.

This is so that once laminated, the vinyl can be fed back into the machine and will still cover the rear sensor when the the vinyl is wound forward far enough for the rear registration markers to be picked up by the sensor (if you do not leave enough margin behind the rear markers the vinyl will run out before being sensed).

Here is a photo of the head position for picking up registration marker. Note it is not centred directly over the circle but is slightly in front (off centre)

Phill do you use VW as i think its slightly different set up to our older troup and colourrip .

    just a thought

No Chris – I use troop – but I always thought they had the same core programming?

somebody with VW put me right.

with our older stuff we tell the printer to find the marks from the printer menu buttons, but with VW its done with the software.

I use VW and set up in the same way as Phil then hit the Base Point button. No issues with this method
The sensor can be problematic at times and needs to be adjusted via the service menu and the pot on the cutter head!

    I do too – doesn’t everybody?

The basepoint tells the machine this is the starting point to start detecting the markers

I dont base point using colorip and it works fine 😕

I did ask the engineer why when you choose the reg marks option why the machine does not feed forward enough to cover the back sensor

    reply

    dunno

I sometimes forget to feed forward but all is not lost just tape some scrap vinyl behind 😀

If you don’t press base point in Versaworks then it will start from where you loaded the vinyl into the machine.

I use troop, and just align the circles and straight box with the cutting strip. Get both sides aligned to that and away it goes. 🙂

i use versaworks and dont press basepoint! just load the media and go!! it is a bit fiddly till you get used to it, but then works fine!! i must admit first few tries it never found the marks and was a pain but when you get the initial placement correct, its fine!!

How does it know where to start if you put the vinyl in say six inches in front of the mark. You must load it lined up with the marks when you lock it down ? This would be fiddly. I load it in anywhere make sure its straight and wind it up to the marks and press base point.

    Thanks Phill,

Very helpful indeed!! 😀 So basically i’m gonna leave 4 inches in front and behind the reg marks. I take it theres no need for any margins on either sides of the vinyl. Align the blade with a slight off set to the circle. Will give it another go and see what happens!! As for your question Chris If its how does versaworks know that you want to do an auto cut, it knows it by doing a cut only on the options and keeping the reg marks option checked otherwise it wont do the auto alignment.

    If that’s what you mean??
