Interested in job lot of equipment
Posted by Patrick Smyth on 2 December 2009 at 15:05Hi, I am interested in getting in to signwriting and I came across the following job lot of equipment for sale secondhand. Is it good value or not ? I know 13,000 euro ( about £ 11,700 ) is a lot of money but I gather Gerber is a good make and the person selling it has offered to spend a few hours showing me how to use it. Thanks in advance for any replies.

Well I saw a Versacamm sold recently for £6000 complete with software, a Sony Vaio laptop, new 440ml inks and lots of vinyl etc.
This being a 760mm print & cut would have been a far better proposition.
Personally I think that the Gerbers have had their day, especially as digital printers such as the Versacamm are coming on to the used market more often.
The width of the Gerber FX would be too small for most sign projects, more suited to small graphics and labels. Not a deal I would jump at personally.
A good 610mm cutter new at say £1100 (Graphtec, Roland, Summa), Coreldraw or some sign software and some basic sign tools etc would get you going far better and a great deal cheaper IMHO. -
Too much imo.
You may be better off getting a NEW PC, Software, Versacamm (or similar) & Heat Press. Unless you have a particular requirement for a themal machine?
-
Does it come with some sort of sign software to run the Gerber machines?
(Omega, Graphics Advantage etc)
If it has an older sign software program, does it include the dongle?
Those are the first questions I’d ask.
Love….Jill -
Thanks for your replies.
The seller says it comes with the software ( graphix advantage: composer). He says this software is an extra €1000 when buying new, it comes with a dongle for the back of the computer to prevent copying.
He says when he bought it new it cost €15,500 for:
The gerber edge fx printer
the 15" ngerber plotter with itThe 24" gerber plotter
and the software package that runs all of them.along with this he is selling :
the heat press for t-shirts
aluminium corner rounder worth €250
rolls of vinyl both 24" and 15" sprocketed
application tape
heat gun, squegees, scalpols etc.corriboard
some dibond (aluminium coated sheets for outdoor signs)contacts for suppliers of vinyl etc, t-shirts and a training day to outline the basics of using the equipment
So with this he says I would be saving 4,500 approx. He says
granted the guarantee has run out but the equipment is as good as new.I think the seller may be asking too much for it , although the advantage is that I get a days training. Its hard though to get good equipment at a reasonable price secondhand….but on balance I am thinking I may be better off just starting with a cheaper cutter. I have read a lot on this excellent website and at least I know not to go for a cheap chinese cutter on ebay.
-
Patrick, it is too much money! how can you be saving 4,500??
Buy some new equipment with some proper training not a couple of hours.
If you are prepared to pay that much for something 2nd hand you have no worries.
-
I am totally with Brian on this,
an edge is only good if you have a certain type of work.
and totting up the job lot I would not go more than 5k for the lot
it is second hand and for around 12K you could buy a 1600mm versaart printer,Peter
-
And if he bought the software at the same time as the FX he would have bought the Omega software. It changed from Advantage to Omega in 2000.
-
I bought Graphix Advantage 6.2 in 1998 for $900, as far as I know it won’t run on anything newer than Win98SE.
It’s pretty much obsolete I think.
I think you could invest in new equipment for cheaper.
Corel X3 (not the newest) is around $50 and I just bought a 24" Graphtec plotter for about $1800.
Not sure about the other stuff. -

If he says a day will learn all you need to know, it’s no wonder he’s selling!!!

No, No, Jammie Dodgers 😉 which as it happens are made in a factory barely a mile from me. Wagon Wheels too 😀

I’m sure Spandex were selling their Gerber FX + Omega + Plotter for around £7000 recently.

Sorry for the hijack – but this is important. 😀
Neil, Wagon Wheels are nigh on impossible to source around here. If Morrison’s have run out, and they usually have, then there are none to be had.
Any chance of popping in to the factory and getting me a catering pack? 😀
-
Party in John Childs!!!! 😀 😀 (haven’t had a Wagon Wheel in ages 🙁 )

Neither have we. 🙁
But if I can get some, then you are all welcome to share.
not too many though!

I have one just about everyday with my 3pm cuppa.
Loads in Tesco’s (?)

I always hated wagon wheels
sickly sweet crappy taste.
The original ones were made by Burtons biscuits, blackpool and slough, if memory serves me.one of those childhood things that were, or are not the same as they used to be,
they were much bigger though when i was a lad, at least a foot across!

Correct on every count. They used to come in unsealed envelopes as well. H&S would have a fit about that today.
Still like ’em though. 😀
