  • Cutting print to fit recess on vw/advice needed

Hi Guys, i need to fit a print in the recessed area (sides on a vw transporter).
The area has rounded corners and vetical sides are not straight angled.

So how can i cut the corners (different radius as well) ?

Do a remove the backpaper and cut the print while in place on the van or should i try to draw pencillines and then cut i on the workbench ?

Hope my english i understandable ;o)

    Hi

There is always the risk of cutting into the paint work if you cut your vinyl on the van… this will not show at the time but soon the rust from the metal will be leaking out all around your print, not nice. Something we do here is to stick application tape to the panel and mark the panel, in pencil, as carefully as possible on the tape (like tracing paper). Peel this off and place it on your print and hand cut the vinyl.

If you have been doing vehicles for ever then you will know exactly how much pressure you will need to cut the vinyl on the vehicle without the risks of damaging the paintwork.

    Good luck..

Hi Red, thx 4 answer, i will try that. Im able to cut it on the vehicle in straight cuts, but it tend to be rather difficult in the round corners. ;o)

Do you lay application on the entire area ? (approx. 260cm x 70cm).

[left]Yeah, cover the whole panel otherwise you won’t get the correct compound curves in you tracing paper template. We use this method for all sorts of weird shapes because when you peel it off and cut it out it will fit back perfectly…

Also when you are doing really difficult curves the application tape will fold over it self and stay like that (if you remove it carefully) so even really difficult shapes can be transferred to vinyl. The vinyl then may need to be heated but you get my drift. Sometimes, however, there is no substitute for cutting on the vehicle… unfortunately that is just down to practice.
