Backing up my work.
Posted by Earl Smith on 17 November 2009 at 09:43Every day , at 5pm, my backup software starts to back up my work.
The problem I have is that the program backs up the same files every day. All the old and the new together. Takes well over an hour and slows the computer down so that sometimes I cannot use it.
Where in XP is there a way to only back up the recently worked on files?
I am using Neros Back it up Essentials.
Any ideas??

It does the job for me, runs in background and you can specify what you do and dont back up.

Thanks Adrian, but the link is for members only.
I hoped there might be a recent history folder in XP that I could copy each day.Earl

Try this one but do a search for the older version v1.1 I think its a lot better and allows you to back up to a local drive its the one I use.

Ian, most useful link… many thanks… basically i been looking for alternatives and didn’t know amazon where into online datastorage and i see rackspace is too… 😀
will however say this to those looking at that link… it is ‘BETA’, which means that its very new program and the bugs are features. Currently looking at Jungle Disk and may give that a whirl.
On my laptop I do have the DropBox solution, which is free storage 🙂
Steve, I been using M$ backup for many years, one thing I am going to suggest is to test your backups, see how they are, if you hit the wrong buttons on backup it can be a nightmare to sort.

not sure why you didnt know that one dave…
i posted it in the UKSG section in July 2008 and its still there right at the top as a sticky post. :lol1: http://www.uksignboards.com/viewtopic.php?t=36039 -
ah that one… i didn’t read the gubbin’s back then rob as i saw the word "beta"… i dont use beta software as it could be a disaster… but now i know a little bit more about it i might try some of the programs, just type Amazon S3 into google and a few come up, all the same I suspect just need it for the server as i have 1 TB of data which currently takes 4 days to backup fully!!!
also, i never go via the forum buttons… only the ‘New posts" button.

well ive been using it for years… just schedule the backup to amazon at end of each day and it does it when everyone leaves work and is stored on "the cloud" virtually. you can then pluck files from it from any location, even restore a complete computer failure onto a new pc.

yeah.. gonna try the jungle disk with the rackspace option on another i server i need to do… same thing it is… the deal a bit nicer with rackspace as you get 10GB free and that be ideal for near free backup solution.
Basically 9p per GB + $5 per month for the server program, very cheap and i am hoping this i can schedule backups throughout the night as during the night my eclipse internet deals dont count datausage.. that should do it
I have to see how the program will work concerning my 1TB, might not even back that up as it will take bloody ages! unless i can send them a harddrive!

Hi Earl – I dont know if you’ve sorted out your problem yet??? I have 2 drives on my pc and 1 is for backup every day or every time I change a file it does it automatically… I bough a cheepo from internet called NTI Shadow from NTI industries…. http://www.ntius.com/en/us/home/default.asp
It really works well and can e set to do all sorts of backups..
Hope it helps if you’re not sorted yet..

that’s fine until you have a fire or they nick the pc.

I also have an external HDD that I use as an extra backup… I forgot to mention it..!!

That jungle disk above was uninstalled, it was dodgy as!
now using Zamada Backup with Amazon S3 cloud for accounts/admin stuff, its doing good, bit slow to backup where we are but it kinda works for 1.4GB a night, its not costing me much.Currently I have a ‘migrate data’ on a 3ware raid card with 6 harddrives in the process of moving 1.6TB of data to fresh harddrives. Really worrying too! It will be done around Thursday/Friday!!!
