Posted by Neil Speirs on 2 November 2009 at 22:34

I hope to be making my first stencils this week, nothing daunting just simple bold text to get me started.

Question is I’ve got two options available on how I can produce the stencils, one use my old inkjet epson 1290 or two use the office laser copier (konica minolta bizhub c350)

    any guidance appreciated

    😀 😀 😀

just noticed that its in the Screen Printing Discussion part.

    never done it sorry
think the problem is a dense enough black on to a clear film.
cut with your plotter on to ruby film ?
cut on plotter t shirt material thats on a clear back ?
special film for ink jets inc solvents using overprinting ?
    limit of my knowlage

We do it a couple of ways..

As you have mentioned, via the Epsom 1290 using in jet transparencies, though some films are better than others… we buy off ebay, very good quality, approx £50 for 100 A4. highest dpi setting.

    Ruby film..

or for speed, just cut black vinyl and apply to clear film…….. i`ve heard some folk apply to the screen…. not recommended.

    Neil,

If it’s just basic block text there is a very good product called Black Posi Mask by Mactac……..It’s a very easy to weed, low tac ‘vinyl’ on a clear plastic backing

Cut as normal through a cutter and weed to expose the clear carrier

I couldn’t recommend it strongly enough

    Hi Neil,
It depends on which printer prints the darkest black. If the laser printer has a Transparency setting use this as it slows the print and dumps loads of toner down on the acetate to make it jet black. If not use the inkjet but I haven’t used one for possies before.

For the acetate I use "Conqueror colour laser transparency film" its really good and makes a very good possie. There are other brands and 3m do them but I think they are expensive. MAKE SURE THE ACETATE IS COMPATIBLE WITH YOUR LASER – EXPENSIVE IF IT MELTS ON THE FUSER UNIT.

Coat and dry the screen in the dark following instructions. Expose from underneath the screen, as in lamp – glass – possie – screen – weight. Make sure there’s good contact between glass and screen. Mine takes 4.5 minutes but all light sources differ depending on strength and distance. Wash out with power hose, wet the front then turn round and spray from back – leave 30 seconds then spray from back until all the stencil is washed out – spray front – don’t get too close with hose. Blot the excess water with a sheet of newspaper either side then dry with heater. Once dry spot any holes with bluefiller, dry then bobs your uncle – your ready to print. 😀

    Cheers John

    Thanks guys!

Denise, I don’t think I’ll bother with the 1290 then if it’s a bit of a hit & miss with the transparencies.

Glenn, can u point me in the direction of a supplier of your black posi mask, I never knew you could go down the cutter route for producing the positives, sounds interesting stuff & it’ll probably suit my beginners needs

John, just checked & yes the copier does have an OHP setting. Again can you point me in the right direction of a good supplier, I’m guessing maybe Viking or Lyreco? Is it also available in A3 as I want to create some large prints on the reverse of hoodie’s that will also include a lot of small text.

Thanks again for your replies, now back to my plans for making a wash out booth from some forex I have sitting around…..who says us scots are tight 😉

You can get transparencies from staples but make sure they are for a colour laser, not sure about A3. As long as there’s no halftones just strip 2 A4’s together.

Good luck making a wash out booth – its easier using an old bath. :lol1:

    Hi Glenn,

Do you have any idea where I can get this from? I’m struggling to get Ruby
film, so I’m looking for an alternative.

    Cheers,
    Jamie
