Where to buy channel and bands?
As the title, I have a sign to make which the customer requires to be fixed to a round post.
1st one requested in 6 years!
Do I need to also get a banding tool? I think i have seen this somewhere. How does the channel fix to the sign?

Lorraine, if you are only doing one sign then buying channel, banding and a banding tool is going to be an expensive way to do it. Not sure about where you live but I have to buy channel in 5 or 6 metre lengths (can’t remember which) and have to buy a minimum number at a time or delivery makes it to expensive to use. Banding tools are expensive as well and only really needed when you are fitting and don’t know the diameters of the posts. Plus with a banding tool and banding you would also need to buy universal clamps.
You might be better off buying in complete from someone like Ashby’s or if you know someone not to far away on the boards that use channel and clips buy a bit off them.
Find out what diameter the post is and buy a band to suit. -

Hopefully you’ll be asked to supply more than one more over the next 6 years or it’s probably not worth while buying in sign channel to make your own. Get a price from Ashby to supply a signblank complete with channel and post clips (Measure the diameter of the post by wrapping a tape measure around to measure its circumference, then calculate the diameter by dividing the circumference by 3.14). Post clips are supplied in distinct sizes (quoted in diameters) e.g 50mm, 76mm, 112mm, 120mm

What’s the point in having left over channel, clips, and worst of all, an expensive tool, cluttering up your workshop for the next ten years?
Measure the posts and, if they are one of the standard sizes, buy just the number of clips you need. If not a standard size you still don’t need a tool because jubilee clip type fixings are available.
Buy in the panel ready made to size, with the channel applied. Fair enough it will cost a bit more than making it yourself from components, but that is offset against the time you will save. Also, specialists will make a much nicer and tidier job of it than you (or I) could.
The easiest route is often the best. Buy it in, put on a mark-up, and sell it on.

I’ll either buy it in ready-made, or he can screw it on, I don’t really think he is too fussed, trouble is, I gave him the choice! Always a wrong move, I know.Thanks for all your advice everyone, at least I know where to get the stuff from if I need it.

Ummmmm…… and if you want to laminate a print to it?
In my (very very) limited experience of signs (and thats an overstatement too!) surely you can buy just a chunk of channel and a couple clips and bung it all on a chunk of whatever substrate you need?
I know I didnt have to purchase more channel than I needed and the clips were per clip from Cherwell – isn’t this the case normally then?
Perhaps I’m coming at this from a print -> sign point of view and thats where I am getting confused.

I must admit, this is the sort of scenario I had envisaged. I will give Cherwell a ring on Monday, just to see.

Yes, Cherwells will sell you short bits of channel rather than full lengths. I buy bits from them all the time.
