Advice on applying vinyl to wood shop front?

Hi,

So far I have applied vinyl to glass shop windows, banners and vans.

Do I need to paint wood with a special paint for the vinyl to stick or do I need to sand first???

Any help appreciated.

Can’t help you with the metal letters as I don’t do them.

But for lettering on painted wood, you need to use an oil based gloss enamel. In my experience, vinyl does not stick well to latex based paint.
Prepare, prime, paint and leave dry for at least a week because if you screw up the vinyl and need to remove it, it will peel the paint right up.
Can’t recommend a brand as I am not local.

Would it be better to cut stencil vinyl and paint onto the wood?

As long as the ply is painted correctly you’ll have no problem with vinyl sticking.

4 or 5 coats, rub down between each and use a 4" roller. 1 primer, 2 undercoats, 1 or 2 coats of gloss finish.

Use good quality paints.

When I paint ply I allow at least 2 weeks to get them painted.

You could cut a stencil but your obviously not sure how to paint so probably best not to use a mask because that way is not straight forward either.

The wood is already painted?

So do you think I could get away with just applying vinyl or would I still need to do a bit of painting?

Depends if it’s a good finished surface?

Are there nibs in the paint? if so I’d rub down and refinish otherwise they’ll stand out way too much when you apply your vinyl.

You would be better checking the condition of the board rather than just assuming it will be OK because it is already painted. When was it last painted and what sort of job was done? If it was done some time ago or wasn’t done properly then you may well find that not only does the vinyl not stick properly but it also pulls all the paint off with it.

Even if you have checked it and it looks to be OK I would still make the customer aware that because it is not going to be repainted there is a possibility that the application tape will take the paint off.

another option, often cheaper than re-painting is bonding/trapping a panel of ali composite to the facia, pre- flood coated if necessary.

Okay, I’ve got the job!!! :lol1:

Now to the actual doing it!! I’m going to go and check the quality of the paint work… hopefully I can just put the top layers of gloss/lacquer on the top???
