  Commercial building costs 2009/2010

  Does anyone happen to know or know where data can be found to see what building costs have been doing this year. I’m seeing data that suggests the costs are coming down and have been since November 2008.

  With so many builders going under due to the recession this must also be having a massive impact on labour costs as builders drop their prices to get work.

  Does anyone know and good data sources that have this data and possibly projections? even domestic data would help.

  Whenever I have researched building costs I have always been astonished at how high they are.

  Perhaps this is because published facts and figures only relate to costs paid out by the public sector (i.e tax payer) whereas in the real world (Private sector) costs are much much lower 😕

  builders in my area haven’t been feeling the pinch except the housing development companies, I am currect working with some builders about my own project.

  I’ve been in contact with a few tradesman lately – tilers, carpet fitters, carpenters, small builders, that sort of thing. To a man they quote the same old high prices they always did, and then go on to complain that they’ve got no work, and wonder why.

  Recession hasn’t hit them hard enough yet.

  With work in most areas being slow in the building trade surely this must be bringing prices down?

  The reason why I ask is we are having a building built shortly (made from steel and very little else) but the costs apparently are going up. This is despite other builders that quoted (2008) have come back to me saying they will do it cheaper. This is because they have little work. Data I have seen suggest the trend is around 5-8% decrease since November 2008 but i can seem to find this consistently across commercial, domestic etc.

  My building is essentially a steel shed with a few offices, though it does have 2 floors.
