  • Difference between canvas types / weights for prints?

Posted by James Breeze on 7 September 2009 at 09:40

Have avoided canvas prints for ages now as customers want the world for IKEA prices but a good customer has requested these so don’t want to let him down.

I’ve got some 24" (need 36") already & it works well but for the life of me I don’t know what it is or have any info on it!

Can anyone tell me / have an opinion on what constitutes a good quality canvas & what to look for (aqueous inks)?

Does it have to be canvas or can it be synthetic?

There are a lot of suppliers doing materials for water based ink and most have a canvas so I think you’ll have to ring round and ask for some samples.

    A few are

Andersons, 3857 instant dry canvas (coated cotton fabric), they do a satin as well.

SMI tech ltd do a few as well, more than is shown on there site.

People seem to conceive synthetics as inferior from experience even if it’s not true at all so think probably cotton (linen mix?) would be preferable.

The idea of Satin finish is nice as I would preferable like to avoid spraying varnish at the end (to be used in commercial area away from fingers) & sounds like it would give a nice end result.

Is there a minimum weight of fabric for a decent looking picture or does it not matter?

I’ve not done much but what I have done has been on synthetic and no one notices.
Having a coating for the water based ink means you need to coat it after anyway to be sure that the print will not be damaged.

As to weight, again not sure, I think as long as it’s stretched then no one will notice the material weight.
You will always get the fussy expert though who will not be satisfied with anything less than a named material etc.

Cheers Steve, I reckon you’re right about this. I’ll get some samples in & go with best quality / price compromise.

In this case I could get away without spraying as he wants them for a single use display (a party) but as I’ve a can of Clearshield on the shelf this is probably the perfect time to get some practice in.

Thanks for the pointers to the Satin finish stuff.

    Cheers,

    Hi

    We have used http://www.artbloc.co.uk

They supply most of their products in a sample quantity of 1 metre which you can purchase.

Had a few of their products – very easy to deal with and offer good advice.
