use different USBport for dongel

I have just re-organised my workshop and moved my computer. i needed more USB ports so I got a hub. But I can’t use the dongel key in it. how do I tell my computer that the dongel is in a different port?!?!
Any help appreciated.

Can you not just leave the dongle in a primary port on the computer………plug something else into the hub e.g. the mouse or keyboard

Well the port is on the back of the computer (i had a little extension lead to the desk previously). I thought the hub would sort the problem and have all the cables neatly tidied up……

I don’t think dongles work from hubs. Might be wrong.
Is your hub a high speed hub? If it isn’t you will experience a few glitches.

Hmmmmmmm right.. no it is not a high speed.
I suppose I’d better get the extension cable out again so…. 😮

If you’re on xp or above a message should pop up and tell you to change to a high speed hub when you plug it in. 😉

Thanks but I am actually starting to wonder f there is something wrong with the hub as the mouse won’t work either…..
I must look into it a bit more…..

I have 2 dongles in my hub, it is powered, mouse likes a primary usb though.

You can buy a longer usb extension cable off ebay male-female
If you’ve ran out of ports on the pc and cant do what graeme suggested you can buy an extension that plugs into the usb headers on the motherboard and sits in a spare pci bay. Should give you full, high-powered 2.0 functionality.

Okay… as I said.. I think there might be something wrong with the hub.. but, in theory, if the hub is working fine there should be no problem with the computer recognising the dongel in another location?
It’s just that on my laptop I have marked to correct port because in the other one it won’t recognise it…..
I mean.. there is no need for re-installing or so?

I have 2 seperate computers with usb hubs (powered type but not plugged in) and they both have no problems with the dongles in the hub, one for signlabs and one for Wasatch rip.

I’ve found that some devices need to have usb connection directly to the motherboard and wont function properly/reliably conected to a hub or extension or even a hub with external power source.
I dont know why tbh! 😳
