advice on punctuation of ‘estate agent window displays’?
Posted by Liam Pattison on 2 September 2009 at 16:41Hi
i was wondering what is the correct punctuation of this text to go onto the side of a van-
Estate Agents Window Displays
Should i write it like this-
Estate Agents’ Window Displays
Is that correct, do i need to use the apostrophe this way?
Thanks
Liam

Interesting site
I would say the apostrophe is not needed as agents is a plural, and as yet they do not own the displays you are advertising?Peter

Thanks for that link Peter, i thought it may be needed as it was referring to displays which belonged to estate agents.
A bit of a confusing one.
If it was referring to boards belonging to a single estate agent it would be ‘an estate agent’s boards’
But as it is referring to boards belonging to more than one estate agent it is ‘estate agents’ boars’
I may well be wrong though

If it said "Estate Agent is" then use an apostrophe = My Estate Agent’s not selling my house!
-
It is a bit confusing, but they do not own the boards or displays.
as you are selling to them, and they are a group, I would leave the aposrophe off, just my interpretation , but if in doubt you could always say "boards and displays for estate agents" that way no if ands or buts 😀

Thanks for your advice, what i will do is send the artwork to the client for his approval, then if it’s wrong i’ll blame him. :lol1:
My girlfriend who did English at university seems to think it needs the apostrophe, but i’m going to leave it off and not tell her or she wont make my dinner.
Thanks again

Lol, my estate agent’s not selling my house either.
False promises man! -
Would it not be simpler and punchier to just say ‘Window Displays For Estate Agents’?
Only asking 😀 -
It probably would be better that way Harry but it’s part of a ‘laundry list’ on the side of a van. The list has lots of other things written the same way requested by the customer. It’s such a quick job i don’t want to rearrange everything.
I’ve sent the artwork now with no apostrophes.
But i am going to send a question about this to the apostrophe society to see what they have to say for themselves.
Cheers
