Applying vinyl to painted site hoarding
I have been asked to quote for fitting large vinyl text to a length of painted building site hoarding. Currently it’s been mat emulsioned but they will run a coat of gloss over it for better adhesion.
The surface isn’t smooth by any means so I was wondering if I will have problems with adhesion and removing the application tape.
I’ll be using Mactac short term semi perm vinyl. -

Its not going to look good if it does stick. Explain the adhesion problems and poor looks, also throw in a quote for a couple of sheets of Foamex or skybond hoarding panel.

you could try a matt vinyl because it does not reflect light as much as gloss, as a tendency to look better. Fitting straight to gloss paint ensure paint is thoroughly dry then go for it, as long as the vinyl bonds enough to pull app tape off just go back & work over any bits of crap etc. Unless they specifically want to remove it don’t worry about using short term or removable vinylKev

Make sure the painted surface is smooth, One of my first jobs was onto painted surfaces and one side had dust and girt blown into the paint before it was dry. It took me 2 hours to lay 10 x 10" letters as the letters would not stick and kept coming back off with the app tape.
Learnt my lesson, know ill feel all the surfaces before i quote in future

This may not work but i know in the past my Dad has used removable vinyl with the letters cut out as a sort of template and then applied this to the surface. You can then spray over it and remove the vinyl to leave painted letters which may look better. Just and idea.

I’ve done quite a few of these on let’#s just say ‘less than perfect’ boards.
Normally the highest tack vinyl I can get (within a price range) and the lowest tack application tape. 3M 50 series was my choice last time:
http://www.uksignboards.com/download.php?id=26738Basically – it doesn’t stick as it’s far too rough to get a proper adhesion.
Heat gunning / flame torch helps in most cases. But on the one pictured above I ended up using spray carpet adhesive to stick the vinyl down in tricky areas as the paint was just so bad.
Do a test section – and don’t be afraid to tell them that it will either have to be a decent paint job (VERY glossy) or you can’t guarantee great adhesion…if they insist you just do it – put it in writing…and hand them a tin of glue.
Oh, yeh. Removable film = kids peeling it off and making new words 🙂
