Exterior 3D sign in polystyrene
Posted by Fran Hollywood on 30 June 2009 at 18:53It’s a while since we have done an exterior sign, it’s been interior ones for sale, 70% off etc. etc. Not that we are complaining, it’s just the times we live in.
Anyway……… I thought it could have used a little more spacing on "The Gym"Fran Hollywood replied 16 years, 3 months ago 4 Members · 4 Replies -

Careful Fran,
Kev will be wanting to know why your fitters aren’t wearing harnesses!Anyway excellent job,
I presume the "box" around the word GYM is remainder of the foam sheet the word was cut from and used as a template to aid fitting?Peter

very smart Fran… I like the simplicity of that.
i kinda know what you mean regarding the kerning. yes maybe it could have been opened slightly to allow for the letters to be identified easier viewed at an angle. by that i mean as a result of the black return closing the letter.
but then again, would it have looked as neat and how it should if the letters had been kerned out as much as an extra 20%? ide think probably not… but i guess its a self preference thing…out of curiosity, how do you fixing styrofoam letters and how well do they stand up the the weather. i.e. do they have a short life expectancy?

Thanks for the comments.
@Lynn. Yeah that image has been cropped. There is another building (that I stood beside to take the picture) that obscures the gable end where the sign is placed and there were a row of Air-Con condensing units also. The big letters are actually smaller than the other sign at the front.
@Peter. I was one of the fitters. We talked about that when we were up there. I normally farm out the fitting, but we should have had the hi viz though 😳
The white foam is the outer which we do use for alignment/spacing. It was very useful for the smaller text. The van was nearly as full leaving as when we arrived, we have load of scrap to recycle.@Robert. That was my feeling too. I think it could have used a little kerning not much, just a little to show the 3D effect better. The customer was delighted so that’s the main thing.
Fixing is a combination of silicone tube type adhesive and steel nails. Life span is mainly down to the location of the sign and how exposed it is to the elements. If the signs were liable to hit with ladders or within reach (vandals) it could be short enough and we wouldn’t recommend them. These were about 6m high and above any glass. In this location I think the paint finish will determine when they might need maintenance, we use a high quality exterior grade paint for these kind of jobs.
