Cutting/splitting rolls of vinyl in two?
Posted by OwenTaylor on 4 June 2009 at 09:46I am printing on a Versacamm 30" and I have just run out of the vinyl I need for this particular job (schoolboy error I know!). I called my supplier and they only have 54" rolls in stock and the 30" won’t be available for a few weeks. Unfortunately they don’t offer a roll splitting service.
Does anyone offer an aftersales roll splitting service?
Alternatively I will only be buying 10m so I could attempt to cut it down myself – can anyone offer any advice?
Many thanks, Owen

Maybe try another supplier just this once?
You never know what it may lead to….

The particular vinyl is quite specialised and is only available from one supplier. I have tried getting is elsewhere in the past due to the high price of the stuff but I haven’t found a comparable product anywhere.
Thanks for the advice though, I will make some calls this morning. You never know!

Worse come to worse I’ve cut down logs with a drop saw using a metal blade. Make sure you tape up the roll where you are going to make the cut. The vinyl cuts well the core will make a bit of a mess.

quit holding your cards so close to your chest and tell us what type of vinyl it is,
I’m quite sure someone on here will know of an alternative supplier, the UK is a big place, Ireland ship also.Ian

Or someone may have some in stock they can let you have.

Sorry I wasn’t sure if was ok to mention names of suppliers etc.
The vinyl is Convex Hi Bond from PrintOne. It’s a thick, matt white, cast digital print vinyl with a super aggressive adhesive.
PrintOne are just around the corner from me so I payed them a visit this afternoon with the intention of buying a 54" roll. They were really helpful and gave me some free samples of alternative vinyls that might do a similar job. I will give these a try and take it from there.
Thanks for the replies.

Owen,
If not try SDM in the republic of Ireland, they hold the range of convex vinyls.

HI Owen
Maybe I’m missing something, if so apologies.. to cut 10 meters of 54" vinyl into 2 x 28" or 1 x 30" and 1 x 24" would only take 2 mins with a stanley knife and a 1 or 2 meter straight edge.Ian :lol1:

The main problem with digital vinyl is keeping it clean, which is why some suppliers won’t cut it.

Didn’t mean supplier to cut Kev, but Owen, carefully on a nice clean table….

I’d love to be able to cut a 54" roll into 2 x 28" :lol1:
Sorry I should have said, on further enquiry they only had 45m rolls in stock or I would definitely have followed your advice.
Emailed SDM this morn, will follow up with a call now I have a spare minute.
