  • Removing painted boat name

Posted by M Brown on 2 June 2009 at 08:55

    Hi all,

I have a boat that needs the name updating. Thing is that the old ones on there are painted on.

What can I use to remove the old text without damaging the boat surface?

Or is that upto the boat owner to remove, as I have included removal in my quote.

What is the surface? Fibre Glass/Wood?
    How faded is the surface?

    Hello Harry,

The boat is made from fibre glass. The surface isnt glossy. its over 30 years old

I would imagine that the fibre glass would have faded then. And when you remove the paint you will have ‘ghosting’. Try some paint remover on a discreet area and if it doesn’t damage the fibre glass, that should work, if you are cutting in vinyl maybe lay a panel down first to hide the ghosting?
If the remover is discolouring the fibre glass I would decide on a panel size and mask off the area before cleaning so as to limit the damage. Then clean thoroughly and apply a background colour.
    Maybe another way though.

Mr Muscle oven cleaner may remove the paint but ‘TEST ON AN INCONSPICUOUS AREA FIRST’.
You could also try some Farecla G3 paste to remove and then Tcut the area.

Ultimately though it’s a bit trial and error.

    😕

    Try Rapid Remover.
Spray it onto an old dish towel and hold it on the lettering to see if it softens up. I wouldn’t spray anything directly onto the boat.
I have used RR to take excess gold leaf off of things.
You will more than likely have a ghost left over.
To compensate for that, I would design the new name so it is enclosed in a decorative panel which would cover the old name.
That might be the best thing anyway, just make a patch.
    Love….Jill
