Paint for Medite

Hi folks

Was wondering if someone could please recommend paint for medite (exterior mdf) which primer/exterior gloss to go for ??

I know after searching boards there are lovers and haters of medite which is to be used for an outdoor sign.

Stay well clear of Medite! in my experience no matter what paint you use
it eventually swells and rots.

I agree with Mike here, would much rather use genuine marine ply, but I have used it in the past and painted it as I would normal fresh timber. 1-2 coats of a high solid primer, 1-2 u/c and then gloss.

Thanks for the reply lads trying to do my homework before commiting.

Had a look at posts several years old by Steve Broughton and he was convinced it could do a job.

But I always take good advice from the majority of people here.

If you are sealing it into a frame you should be aright Andrew, don’t know about others but what I really dislike about it is, it is really hard to get a nice finish on it, ply is much easier.

Any recomendations on marine ply as in suppliers in uk and again which primer/paint to use?

Don’t know about Uk suppliers but make sure it is stamped and is genuine marine ply.
Regarding painting, I prime first with aluminum wood primer then use good quality u/c and gloss, keying the surface between coats. I also slightly radius the the edges (just sand the sharp edge off a little) as the paint skin can sometimes crack along the edges with constant expansion and contraction.

My Turn to agree with harry!
I have jobs going back 30 years in Marine Ply still sound timber,
And same as Harry- Always use Aluminium wood primer first to seal in the oils etc. and genuine ply not WPB.

I must agree with all the painers here ,dont use Medite
i would go for marine or birch ply
stay away from anything marked far eastern
use plenty of oily primer, no acylic
Harrys choice of aluminium primer is the best though the dearest and as he says take the sharp edges off with sandpaper this really makes a difference
