  • Wrapping a BMW Minis Roof from white to Black

    Hi Guys,

Let me introduce myself quickly, I have been running my own business for about 4 years now and things are going very well, have been playing with Vinyl and window tinting and I am quit competent in both applications.

However I have a MINi cooper S that i don’t really like the look of and want to change its roof colour, I have wrapped simple car roofs like Merc’ (190E) with Multifix 5000 series and this is not the best stuff as I’m sure you all know. I find that this does not shrink.

I’m aware that I need a cast vinyl, but I have never played around with this before.

I need to wrap a R53 BMW MINI COOPER S roof and spoiler to black from white.

I have not attempted this kind of thing before in such a scale, I know that my standard Vinyl will not be up to the job due to the complex curves.

What material would you use, advise could you give please 🙂

    Best Regards,
    Chaz

You need a good cast vinyl and you will have to heat it and stretch it at the corners.

I do loads of mini roofs and have a site where I specialise in mini graphics. I fitted almost 250 of them a few years ago for a well know estate agent in London, so can help a little. If you are printing it, make sure it’s laminated.

If not, maybe an Hexpress black cast would be best as this has the air release adhesive on the back which means less bubbles, pretty much any cast will do though.

Best way to do it is to loosen the gutter around the roof as you can tuck the vinyl in behind this. Premask at least the centre line of the vinyl, 610 premask is fine, depending on how you feel maybe oremask the whole thing. Cut the aerial hole out slightly under size prior to fitting on your bench, this make it much easier. Then start to fit along the length of the roof down the middle or ridge, middle out. Keep working along the length of the roof though and not side to side.

You will need to remove the premask and heat in the corners and the middle of the front above the screen. You can use the spoiler to help tension the vinyl towards the rear of the car, and as its only a solid black don’t worry too much if you cant do the spoiler out of the same piece.

    Good luck.
