Gerber Edge 1
Posted by Jim Harris on 4 May 2009 at 17:27Hi everyone…. I’ve just treated my self to a old edge 1!! Its only been used for 10 hours or so Ive been told?
I know its old, I know its slow, but I wanted one lol. Its for my own personal use so speed wasn’t an issue.
I’ve been reading some old posts on this site which have been very helpful ie finding out about print 1 for foils.
If anyone can point me in the right direction for consumables that would be great!! Are print 1 the best? Also who is the best supplier for sprocket-ed vinyl and other edge ready materials? Does anyone know a good gerber engineer?
Many thanks for all your answers Cheers Jim

Hi Jim – welcome – I don’t know much about the Gerber edge never having owned one but hopefully someone will advise 😀
-
Hello Jim
I’ve no experience with a Gerber but I had a PC600 for a few years and used Print One for the cartridges. Very good service and had no problem with the products. Hope this helps

When I had my Edge, I only used foils from Print 1. Great service, quality and value. I now have a Cadet and still use Print 1 for lots of stuff.
Found Hexis to be good for sprocketed media
-
Jim unless others pipe in I would start with Spandex. They have the full Gerber line of materials.
-
Print one are the guys for the cartridges, you can buy the vinyl almost anywhere as most suppliers are prepared to sprocket it if you buy a full roll. We’ve kept our Edge even though we are running a full digital setup.
Fantastic machne, a workhorse, you can leave it run all day, the foils never go off, no odour and easy to transport if you need to move it.
-
Hi everyone, thanks for the hello’s
Looks like its print 1 for foils and Hexis for vinyl l (thanks Jason)
I haven’t been on the boards for a while due to an addition of two children to the family… no sleep…. nappy’s and screaming seem to have taken up most of my time lol
Does anyone know if the edge 1 shows print hours, also whats a good price for foils from print one?
Sorry about all the questions Jim
-
Hi Jim, there is a hidden button on the panel to the right, near the reset button I think, you need to press this, I know there is a way of checking but we have never bothered because we bought ours directly from Spandex.

Great Thanks Jason, I’ve got to pick it up on Wednesday, hopefully I will find the hidden button cheers Jim

Hi Jim, I also have an Edge 1 , great machine but obviously limited against a full digi machine, having said that I have seen some amazing work on 4 edge talk, I guess it’s all about knowing what you can achieve.
All the main vinyl suppliers will supply 380 sprocketed material, I’ve used Spandex, Metamark and Print 1.
Print 1 are by far the cheapest for foils but as with all suppliers there prices have climbed due to the weak pound. As for engineers Spandex are the only official people for this, it’s £280 for a call out which only includes 1 hours labor plus parts.
I recently had both O rings break that drive the top roller (the platen) I was told it would take over an hour to replace them. The cost of parts £1.29 each However I spoke to someone else in technical who suggested changing them myself so after asking some questions on here and another forum for the Edge I got an email from someone who dealt with software , he spoke to a colleague in hardware and they sent me a copy of the procedure to change them. Saved a lot of money. The hidden button is between the slew button and the setup but as far as I know it’s for printing a test This may help.
http://www.gspinc.com/downloads/PDF/fas … Manual.pdf -
Hi Shaun, Thanks for the manual.. I think your I right, after reading the manual there is no mention of print hours only a test cut as you say.
The guy who I bought if off claims he as not used a full roll of vinyl and only part foils since purchasing it from new, he sounds very genuine.
When I pick it up tomorrow I will do a print test, is there anything else I can do or are there any other tell tale signs that the machine a had a hard life?
Thanks for all the info cheers Jim
-
Manual can be found here.
-
Jim.
It would be difficult to tell how much work the machine has done,One way is to look at the sprockets to see if there is any glue build up but then if the machine is looked after then there would be very little as it’s advisable to clean the sprockets as this can affect registration.
The O rings I mentioned are next to the sprockets and they do crack if the machine is not cleaned regularly , as I have found.
-
If it has not been used, as the guy states who I buying it off I bet the O rings are perished. I hope not!
On my summa 610 I use a little white spirit on the glue build up.
Whats the best things to clean the O rings with as white spirit would surely make them go brittle, (olive oil lol) also the print heads are there cleaning kits available form Print 1 any suggestions would be most great full….. cheers Jim
PS thanks for the manual Tony

I also have a PDF on changing the O rings. I do not know the Part # or how to care for them, just a "How to change". If anyone wants or needs it you will have to email me for it. I’m a software guy and just collect documents as they pass my way.

Hi Tony.
I’ve just realised it was you who sourced the pdf for me.
As to Jims question about cleaning the O rings, Spandex tech guys say to just keep them dust free which is not easy with a huge dust magnet like an Edge. For cleaning the heads you need an alchohol wipe.
-
Thumbs up for Print one from me, I have an Edge and use them for lots of things , excellent company , I would like to see a gallery of edge stuff , see how far people are able to push them , I love using mine , worth there weight in gold when i need a clear sticker with white.
-
Thanks Shaun thanks Tony,
I have a small air purifier that draws dust onto some sort of ultra violet light inside, you have to take it apart and wipe in down every few weeks it gathers loads of dust so I shall place it next to the Gerber hopefully this will do the trick.
I have to pick the gerber up tomorrow along with a gsx plus plotter and signlab software + dongle. I wont be back until around 10pm so I will be playing around with the thing all night lol
Once again many many thansk you eveyone’s help!!! Cheers Jim

Shaun,
At present I’m using vinyl-master it was cheap but I find it good….. I was using easysign before which I thought was great, especially the right click page query option which enables you to use loads of off cuts but the dongle broke and the company who I bought to software off refused to change it ( I would love to tell you the company am I allowed on this board?)
They said I needed to upgrade but I was happy with the edition I was using and couldn’t afford an upgrade, they refused point blank so I stopped buying all my vinyl from them.
The guy who I bought the Gerber off is also giving me genuine Sign lab software.
I would love to go back to easysign but at the moment signs are only a hobby so I simply cant afford it plus the wife would kill me lol
Cheers Jim
-
I’m also running a GSx plus and signlab. And my name’s Harris. Spooky
Where are you in Wales?
-
Omega composer 1.54
Is it possible to upgrade software?, I design it in corel and transfer it over to the edge, Doing Blue metal chrome, flo orange/red, chrome karts at the moment and black/ lime green and chrome engine covers all that i cant do on the inkjet . look good once done but

I have seen people name and shame on here but I don’t know what the rules are.
As long as you are telling the truth I would see no problem.

There’s alot of us about mate :lol1:
At present I’m in a little village on the out skirts of Neath or 7 Miles from Swansea the village is called Bryncoch, I was born in Worcestershire been here for about 12 years love the place, its lovely and quiet and I’m fortunate to have some great Welsh friends.
What other equipment are you running? Jim
-
Tim, Spandex are doing an upgrade offer at the moment on Omega, probably worth changing if you are using an early version, however we tend to do most of our work in illustrator and then eps across to Omega.
However I do like some of the functions in Omega, just not drawing. -
Shaun, It was Victory D
I bought the easysign software from them along with a desk top pc and a second hand Roland PNC 1000 for around 4 or 5k this was about ten years ago, the software dongle packed up around 3 years after, when I bought the software I was told if the dongle ever broke in the future regardless of a time factor that it would be replaced for free…. how stupid I was not to have had them put it in writing.
At the time of purchase I told them I worked mobile and that the dongle was sure to break due to these conditions but they stated that the dongle was a security issue and that it would be replaced as it was not part of the program and only used to stop the program from being copied…..
I think at the time they wanted £350 for a new dongle or approx £400 for the upgraded version, I just simply hated the fact that I was told it would be replaced for free ….. I’m a man of my word if I say something I will stick to it I guess I made the mistake of thinking everyone was the same.
I still have the recorded telephone conversation somewhere? Jim
-
Jason, thanks for the advise but the wife will kill me if I spend any more of our holiday money… I’ve only bought the Gerber for my own personal business use as I’m no longer making signs for a living, if I cant get on with sign lab which I’m sure I will unless the version is very old I shall stick with Vinyl-master and export it over hopefully? Jim
Sorry I haven’t replied, for some reason I haven’t been getting emails reminders for this thread, must of clicked on the wrong link.
Victory have had bad press on here before. I’ve never had any dealings with them but from what I’ve heard I don’t plan to.
How are you getting on with the new toy? Why not post some of your efforts.
-
Shaun
No worries, I thought you must work for VD what with no reply lol
Well I’ve got the edge up & running great, I’ve even found the date of manufacture on it 07/05/03
If you pickup the lid, look directly behind the edge decal on the inside front you will see it. Sorry that’s as best has I can explain it.
I need to make an order with Print 1, you get a free guillotine if you buy 8 foils.
I’ve as yet to get the plotter cutting, its me not the plotter, I need to allocate some time to have a mess around with it.
When I’m up and running, I will post my efforts for sure

Jim
Do you Nobby (Nobby’s Signs) he is just along the motorway / dual carriageway from you at Cross Hands.
I have found the sticker you where talking about it’s on the right with it’s back facing you if that makes sense, mine says 10/8/6, surely an Edge1 has to be older than 3 years old?
-
Shaun
I know cross hands but not Noddy sorry.
I’ve got the same date on the Signlab e6 info sheet (piece of paper with original password on it)
Very confusing an 06 edge?
My date is printed on the tin rather than a sticker. It cant be a service date because the guy who I bought it off said that he never had it serviced due to not using a full roll of vinyl from new. I wonder who would know for sure?
