  • Best material for making ‘cardboard’ cut-outs?

Posted by John Dorling on 6 April 2009 at 15:00

    Hi All

No – it’s not a trick question! I have a customer who needs some life-size cut-outs contour cut to the shape of a person, on a sturdy enough material to stand up on their own (with a flap at the back for support). Anyone know of a good material to hand cut for this purpose? I need something lightweight, rigid, easy to cut but not too thick.

    Thanks

    John

    John,
I used to use a material called Kapa Board for these some years ago.
Paper surface, I did the illustrations with paint, 13mm foam core, quite rigid and cut easily but possibly a little on the light side if people can touch it or knock into it. I used a gateleg style support on the back
I think it’s still available from Robert Horne

Europoints x-board would be perfect for this and have used a similar product (Dufaylite) for exactly the same thing.

John, I was going to suggest polystyrene foam as we have done similar jobs in the past, but then you said you didn’t want it too thick 🙁

Saying that though, if the foam was say 5" thick it wouldn’t be any deeper that a cardboard sign with a flap. To make it interesting you could use thin sheets of foam (1" thick) and glue them together to create a larger contour or halo type effect.
It will also take vinyl or a water based paints OK…….. just an idea.
