Soyeb, what sort of background are you from, if I may ask.
Why did you decide to buy a printer, and start a business if you had no idea what the market costs of the products and services are, did you not do any research?
What printer have you bought and what did it cost? are important factors on working out your own costs for instance, as well as running costs and your overheads etc.
Actual prices are something that most of us tend not to discuss in the public forums, for obvious reasons.

Have you not given this any thought at all 😕
Don’t worry though, this business is so easy you’ll be making millions overnight……….it honestly is that easy…. 😉
Why did I serve a four year apprenticeship……I’m confused. 😕

Hi Soyab,
these are all things you should have worked out before you bought it – surely you MUST have some clue as to what you planned on selling something for before you bought it.
If only everything was as easy as buying some kit…and then getting all of the information off somebody else…
I don’t know your experience level (nil from the sound of it), supplier costs, machine, premises – anything so can’t even start to hint at giving you a reasonable markup rate or hourly rate.

Soyab, ive been in the game 3 years in October, having bought a company thats 60 Years old. The staff have a combined experience in the sign trade of nearly 150 years, and even we have trouble pricing sometimes.
So…. you may well be screwed, unless you’ve thought this through and have a target market, USP, or a customer base that is current.

Hi Soyeb that may seem like an hostile response you got most people on the boards are willing to give help & guidance but none will be willing to do the job for you. It is a bit like buying a shoe shop in the middle of six other shoe shops then asking them what they charge. I would suggest you book some courses with business link to see if starting in business is for you. they will help you with sales & marketing but will not do it all for you

Pricing is easy
COST OF MATERIALS + LABOUR + OVER HEADS + PROFIT = PRICE

Subscribe to SignCraft magazine, it will help you get a better eye for layout as well as it comes with a free pricing guide based on your shop’s hourly rate.
You do need to learn pricing or you will soon go broke. And don’t lowball other shops. The stain left by lowballers after they go belly-up is hard for us established shops to eradicate.
Not trying to sound harsh, but surely you have thought this whole thing out rather than just buying a printer and thinking it spits money out the other end.
There is more to signs than buying a printer. You need to know colors, fonts, basic design rules, which materials to buy, where to get them, how to build a quality product, and what to charge for it.

Love….JillAw Jill…. I wish all the (potential) customers that walk into my shop believed in one needing basin design rules and quality products. Seems to me like more of them think that design time should be free… but that’s a whole different story.
Going back to the topic – if you have no experience in this industry at all… might be little tough. I use my own pricing software…well, Excel document which I have designed myself based on what i have learned in my 10 year sign industry experience in Canada. As long as you know WHAT to include in your pricing, you can easily create your own guide. But the key is to figuring out ALL of your costs (materials, your labour costs, overhead, etc).
