  • Text on Car rear windows. How much to charge?

Bit of a cheeky question and I don’t know if I can ask this on the forum. If not then please take this post off.
My main work is "Garment decorating" . Also sublimation on mugs and such like. No signs or Auto graphics. But yesterday I was asked if I could supply a 50 x 30 text in vinyl for the rear window of a car. Nothing hard, just one or two colours. I had some vinyl that came free with the cutter so I gave it a go and it came out OK. The customer was very happy and has just come in and ordered 20 more for their auto club. They fit it themselves.
My question is ; how much do I charge per graphic? I have no idea.
Hope somebody can give me some pointers.

    Hi Earl,

Ask 50 signmakers this question and you will probably get 50 different prices.

Here’s my rule of thumb for what it’s worth…

Assuming 50cm x 30cm, using 61cm wide vinyl and tape and that you have already covered the design/layout charge in charging for the first one.

Cost of decent quality materials approx £1.50 per sticker providing you have them in stock. Multiply this by a factor of 5 (for vinyls – less or more for other materials) to get £7.50.
Plus your time in cutting, weeding, applying tape and trimming. I’d ‘guesstimate’ doing 10 of these per hour without breaking sweat providing they are not too intricate. Your hourly labour rate may vary, but £40.00 per hour wouldn’t be extortionate.

Add in your cutter time (because machines have to be paid for) of around £10.

    So, 20 stickers at £7.50 each = £150, plus £80 labour plus £10 cutter time = £240 for 20 or £12 – ish each.

Then you have to factor in the most vital part of any signmaker’s estimation calculation – the ‘buggeration factor’. If the job is fiddly, requires running around for supplies or chasing artwork or to deliver, or you expect the client to mess you about on payment – stick on some extra. Conversely, easy jobs for nice clients can have a ‘reverse buggeration factor’ applied for a discount.

    Hope this helps

    Thanks Chris.
I´d thought about 15€ per sticker so I under calculated. It turned out to be 2 colours in the end. I laid on top of the other. Should have been about 20€ or so. Customer gave me the wrong info.
What has come from this job though are 20 Polo shirts with Embroidery. So it turned out OK in the end.
    Thanks Earl
