  • can anyone help with ideas for unit partitions?

Posted by Warren Beard on 3 March 2009 at 11:25

    Hi All

I’m looking for some ideas for partitions for a unit, customer has asked for a large banner to hang across but has also asked if there are any better alternatives.

I’ll be seeing them tomorrow and will get some pictures of the space but thought I could offer some suggestions while I am there.

It is to be printed as well.

    any help appreciated

    cheers

Depends on the purpose of the partition.

I have seen a very effective use of exhibition panels to create an office partition within a small industrial unit.

    that works.

If its only as a room divider have a look at using cable/rod systems and acrylic panels, poster holders and display units (£££’s, but can be stunning) see Fairfields for ideas…………

Thanks guys but they don’t want to separate themselves but just put up some sort of visual barrier so they can’t see what’s going on the other side of the factory (maybe it’s distracting or something) They mentioned a banner but thought there might be a better way with reasonable costs to do something similar.

I’m thinking it’s going to either be a banner, flag or posters 😕

I’ll let you know tomorrow when I have pictures and a better idea of what they are after.

    cheers

What about a"twist" banner system – there similar to POP UP stands but you can link them infinitely, and they can curve so you could have some kind of wavy wall???

You can do this with the panels, just dont put them all the way up. You can also get cleaver by tiling large graphics over A3/A4 poster pockets. Other thing to look at is Cafe barrier systems……

Here is the gap they want to fill to replace the ugly thing that’s there now. They are a new business so needs to be most cost effective solution.

They would prefer not to have a join 😕 so might have to be a large banner, anybody know a supplier for banners at this size with high quality print?

    size of gap is 3000mm x 5800mm

if you use a banner why not fasten with something like the trim Spirit Displays (in the toolbar). Its a a channel that accepts a special plastic trim to tension the banner, its used on ad trailers etc and comes in 6mtr lengths i think.

Can they print this in one piece?

Is this a cost effective solution and how easy is it to fit?

One of my concerns is the beam (can’t remember what they called 🙄 ) is quiet thick so not sure how I would attach the frame to it without drilling in to it which I’m not sure is even possible with normal drills 😕

    any thoughts?

They print up to 5m wide 😮 so I can get a banner with eyelets etc in one piece.

Any suggestions on how to attach to these pillars so they look neat as it is in the entrance to the new unit, should I run a cable across and tighten with a turnbuckle?

    any suggestions?

    cheers

You can get it from Universal cheaper and its a two part aluminium system no plastic bits.

Its about £13-£14 for 3m of both the track and insert (top of my head). Does away with any eyelets showing and as Kev says it’ll hold the tension in it too, would imagine it would be quite hard to get an eyeletted banner completely wrinkle free. Spirits is only 3m per length too. We’ve got some of this on order from Universal to replace the prints in the reception area, will post some pics when its done.

Would of thought a few good sharp 3.5mm drill bits and some self tappers would be more than adequate to hold it in place.

Are you talking about structural "I" beams, therefore HSS (or better) drill bits, starting with a 4-5mm pilot hole and work up in a couple of bites to the desired size. A little squirt of WD40 will help. Self tappers probably wont take, so if its long term, get a die set and bolt it. Failing that i have seen clamps that fit on them in the past, but not sure of suppliers.

Cheers Andy, is it fairly easy then to drill through those thick beams? I thought you would need a serious drill and bit to drill lots of holes in it?

Depends on what they are mate, we’ve got I beams in ours but its folded metal work about 2mm thick. Drills relatively easily with a good sharp bit and some patience. If its the older ones I’d imagine they’d be thicker (10mm ish?)

Maybe see if they have a beam out of sight and ask if you can do a test to establish the best fittings?

yeah these one’s are about 10mm thick.

I’m now thinking of maybe some sort of way to attach something to the top and just hang the banner down as I could loop some brackets around through the top gaps in the roof trusses.

need to see what fixings I can find for these options 😕

    cheers

just a good sharp HSS bit will drill RSJ’s however you’re problem, going by the picture is that because RSJ’s are H section you may end up with out a flat face to fit to. Hard to see in picture.
I’ve also had ratchet strap webbing stiched in top & bottom of banners to tension them. Also 5mm wire on a turn buckle but ensure everything is rated because it takes a lot of tension to stretch a 5mtr banner straight, you will also have to drill a larger hole in the RSJ. Last one i did i modified 20mm studding to accept the cable, drilled 20mm hole in each beam with a mag drill, then just tightened the studding to hold banner straight.
