Where to buy Vinyl?
Posted by Matthew Greer on 18 January 2009 at 20:23Ok i have had my vinyl machine about 2 months now and i am running low on vinyl so its time to get some stock in. I got my last vinyl from grafityp, should i carry on getting it from there or has anyone got any recommendations. Where I used to work we got it from robert horne or spandex.

Hi Matt
Grafityp are a good company for many things but their vinyl is pants (or at least used to be).Horne for Avery
Amari plastics for Macmark
Europoint for OracolAll good vinyls, I am sure there are others which I cannot think of at moment

I am going have to try and get an order in at robert horne me thinks. Can you oder of horne if you have not got an account does anyone know?
-
Ive found some of the Grafityp stuff to be a little weak, but I still find it easy to use on curves.
Im due to order some new stuff this week so I may try a different brand.
-
It was a long time ago I used Grafityp, found it brittle and even varied in thickness across the width… probably changed now so don;t take my word for it.
Call your nearest branch of Robert Horne Matt, they deliver (for a price) or you can collect.. they take credit card payments over the phone.

Cant seem to find many colours on hornes website. Also can you only oder 50m of them as that is to much for me at the moment.
-
You can order minimum 5 meter lengths (but you pay more of course), they have lots of colours in the 700 series (ask for a swatch with your first order, probably won’t get one but keep asking) which is more expensive than 500 series but 500 is really only for flat interior stuff, best to start as you mean to go on otherwise you will end up with all sorts of different rolls in your collection.

Yeah will phone them up tomorrow and ask them to send me a swatch of the 700 series. Wonder if they got a price list/folder of what they do.

Unless you have an account with most of the suppliers mentioned you will be paying the top price and , and many do not sell small quantities.
Robert Horne I gave up on, they really aren’t interested in small orders, although I buy mostly full rolls. Spandex are in my opinion are the same.
Europoint, have always given good service, but I have a small issue that hasn’t been resolved after 4 monthsTry Cherwell they are a family run company, and small enough to look after smaller firms but still give the best service they can.

It might also be worthwhile checking out The Vinyl Corporation for smaller amounts, plus you dont need an account to order. They have a decent range of vinyl from different suppliers.

I’m afraid you’re wrong there Peter, I have used both Amari (Mactac) and Horne (Avery) over last 4 months since I set up again after being abroad and their prices are 20-25%lower than Cherwells (have just looked in my Cherwells price list) and I do not have an account with either. Just starting again I tend only to buy in 10 meter x 610mm pieces and both companies have given me good service (sometimes delivering for free when they were in the area even though I had stipulated I would collect from depot).
Perhaps it depends on the individual depot and the way you approach them.
And yes, Hornes website is not good for viewing their vinyl products.

How can you say I am wrong? Cherwells dont sell Avery for a start, like how can you say Grafityp vinyl is pants, without substantiating it?
I have dealt with all the companies mentioned, and just gave my opinion, which I believe is good advice to someone starting out, and again just my opinion, the bigger companies arnt always the best to deal with for small quantities.
And if you did have an account, then I would bet the prices would be considerably lower

Nothing wrong with Grafityp vinyls. they have various series of vinyl like all other good brands of vinyl. buy a budget/shorter term series, expect a lower performance and vice versa. I have really only used their Wrap media and certainly cannot fault it. has to be one of the best wrapping vinyls available.
If you are looking for vinyl options and sources, download the sign toolbar and have a look on there. far too many for me to list and link too here but has a big list of all the vinyl makes and suppliers in the uk.

Just thought, Amari recently started to charge for delivery even if you collected, several people on the boards mentioned it, is it still the same?

You are wrong with Robert Hornes not supplying small quantities Peter, we have almost daily deliveries from them (minimum 5 mtr). 😀
Your right with what you say about Cherwell thou, never yet had a problem with them and been using them for as long as I can remember! 😀
-
Sorry Chris,
just to make things clear, I did not say Robert Hornes dont do do small lengths, I said they are not interested in small orders,
Your monthly spend will be quite considerable, as you say you have daily deliveries, I order small lengths from other suppliers, that I have accounts with, and only spend with occasionally, but I still get good serviceIts just my experience, after Robert Horne approached me some time ago, to open an account, with them, they have still not managed to do so.
and on the one order I made and paid for in advance let me down,Phone Robert Horne as a new customer, as mat would be, and ask for 5m of vinyl, then you will see what I am on about.

You did not say that Peter, you said this…
Unless you have an account with most of the suppliers mentioned you will be paying the top price and , and many do not sell small quantities.
I do not have an account with Amari and their prices, as I mentioned, are 20-25% cheaper than Cherwells who you recommended to a newcomer who had said price was an issue.
Cherwells may indeed give good service to small businesses but that was not the issue. You said they may not deal in small quantities but as Chris and I have said they do.
I only said you are wrong on the facts of price and small lengths, not on service and commitment to small folks.
On the grafityp thing I substantiated it with my previous experience, like yourself when a company lets you down I have a long memory, and I did mention twice that it was a long time ago that I bought their ‘normal’ vinyl and for sure it was pants. As Rob mentions and I have seen reviews Grafityps wrap vinyl has good recomendationsand perhaps all their other range too, but I will never try it again, I have no need to.

When someone replies to a topic on vinyl commenting about a "small order" Peter, most people would take it that you are referring to small lengths, glad you’ve clarified that :lol1:
As a "first timer" I would definitely go down the Cherwell route.
-
Ian, the reason you cannot say I am wrong is because you dont know how much I am paying, I just gave my suggestion that a good supplier for a new start up would be Cherwells, price negotiation is down to the individual,
Matt can ring around and see what the various companies offer him,Not wanting to get into a war,
just trying, like you, to offer advice
BTW I missed where Matt said price was an issue?
Peter

We all try to give advice and in this case you are right and I am wrong, I got it wrong way round I’m afraid…….
BTW I threw in the price thing because I had an idea and wanted to see where it led, but no need to follow up on it now.
Sorry again

Has anyone got the phone number for Cherwells?
Thanks

Download the uksignboards toolbar to solve your troubles.
-
cant see, to find Cherwells details on the uksignboard tool bar.
Has anyone got it?
Thanks -
Just to put a word in for Metamark.
I am fairly new and only order small quantities as I need it. They set me up an account straight away with good prices.
I like their colour range, minimum quantity only 1 m and their frost for glass range is great.
I’ve tried several others such as Grafityp, Oracal and find the Metamark 7 series the best so far for weeding, and forgiving to work with. I have found I can pull back off, gentle heat will reform any minor creases and relay it.
If have to do a small quick sign I can have the 1m of vinyl by midday the next day. all good so far.
