  • Blade marking vinyl

Hi – Was wondering if someone could help me.

I know the subject sounds stupid – but what I mean is, when the blade isn’t supposed to be cutting, when its just moving, for example, from letter to letter, it will leave a mark.

I didn’t really notice before, but I recently cut a larger graphic and it is more noticeable.

Anyone know why this is happening?

Should I raise the blade and higher the cutting pressure?

The blade may be to low. Raise it then this should solve the problem.
Another reason could be the blade holder may be shot causing the blade to stay in the vinyl when it should have moved to the next letter.

It doesn’t keep cutting – it just leaves marks. I’m hoping raising it will help

If the holder is knick-knacked when the holder is raised the blade will drop causing the blade to scratch the vinyl.

Well, i think, you should check how much does the blade stick out of the holder. If this sticking is appropriate then there should be a holder or head problem. There should be also the low vacuum problem so the vinyl is not laying on the base but is a little bit up.

As MilosV says, could be a vacuum or vinyl ‘bunching’ problem or only other alternatives are blade too low through setting or dust at top or blade holder head not returning back up far enough.

From personal experience,if the machine that you are using is one of the earlier Roland plotters it may be that the small leaf-type return spring that lifts the cutting tool off the vinyl when moving to the next cut may be weakened due to age.(Newer plotters have solinoids to provide the "active" lift). If you remove it and slightly bend it , it may give it the required lift for another term.
Otherwise a replacement spring might be in order.
