I have been researching two print and cut options. The Roland seems to have a strong user base and a good track record. We are an ad agency with our own print shop and dont do high volumes, more low to mid volumes where quality is key whether for outdoor or indoor.

Then again speed does come into play at specific times. We are not located in the UK, I am in the Caribbean, and support usually comes from Miami and is usually decent if you really need it. We have an Encad Novajet 750 and have maintained it for the last three years pretty much on our own wothout any major problems. However now we need to upgrade.

I was starting to lean strongly to the Roland which has been offered at under 25k US to us but now the Mimaki, which prints a larger size, is being offered under 20k US to us.

Anyone have any comments on the two ?

    thanks

I’d like to say firstly that I have a bias towards Roland owning Roland machines.

But if I didn’t need white and wanted a 4 colour machine I would go the Mimaki.

It’s print and cut technology in terms of segments I think is better. It has better speeds in 4 colour mode I know the XC540 is a 6 colour machine.

The only issue is that they haven’t been around for that long so your entering the unknown in terms of problems with the machines.

The other good feature of the Mimaki over the Roland is that the ink cartridges aren’t used simultaneously. This makes for very good over night operation because if one colour goes out your print run doesn’t stop.

I think from memory the Mimaki is a single head machine? Someone correct me if I’m wrong but I think if the head went you’d be up for more money.

Anyone feel free to step in here.

    Thanks Jason,

I think the Mimaki is placed squarely at the XC-540.

If you go to the Mimaki site they
indicate they have both white ink overlay and they are also done in 6 colour configs.

You are right about the printhead and also the maturity of the product. The XC-540 seems like a mature product. We would be early adopters with this Mimaki, not necessarily always a disaster but usually more likely to have us being high tech guinea pigs (something which can have its benefits).

The price and the added size we would get for effectively the same print / cut functionality with 6 colour and white ink overlay printing is very attractive.

I didn’t know you could get the Mimaki print and cut with white option?

    Is this confirmed?

I didn’t even bother to ask at the show if it came in a white option.

I’ll have to go ask next door.
