Coming up with a company name???
Posted by John Wilson on 7 December 2008 at 19:43OK I have decided to split my company into two, mainly because I do alot of clothing work and want to try getting other work too(using my versacamm) but I feel that people think I’m mostly a clothing company
So what do you guys (and girls) take into consideration when coming up with company names? Been wanting to do this for a while and its the name thing that’s stopping me 👿

One idea would be to take your first initial, your wife/partner/mum/dad/ first initial, add what you want to do say clocks cos you make speciality clock faces on the vcam then ltd
so it would be for example j.w.clocks.LtdNot original but a start. It limits you to one product of course so you could replace the word clocks with traders/trading/visuals or even vcammprintables.
My mate did his property property services this way using him and his wife to form I.V.property services.
I know other people who who use the first initial thing and put AND in between to form, in my mates case
IAV property services.just my contribution.

john an idea to go with, use your new company name and have the textile one added as:
joe bloggs signs incorporating jack black textiles so the main company stands out more? 😀nik

remove the L from what Andrew suggested and your right on track 😛 😛 😛 😛 only jokin john

J W clocks TD? Sorry Dave, I don’t get it. 😉

I would keep it simple. Try and say what you do in your business name. e.g if you’re a plumber call yourself JW Plumbing. An electrician would be JW Electrical. For signs simply JW Signs or John Wilson Signs.
I’ve done vans for lots of companies and still don’t know what their core business is. No point in picking an obscure name – say what you do, that’s my take on it 😀

well thos who can see john’s webiste. click it…
but the TGTS is his shorten name now, but it does seem a bit lost to someone who doesn’t know him.So
The Glasgow T? Signs instead of The Glasgow T-Shirt Shop (TGTS) is something he talked with me b4What could u replace the T with?

From a marketing point of view I think you are too small to start branching off different names to cater for different products. It takes time and alot of effort to get a new brand/name recognised and promoted from a recoginition point of view and a website search engine point of view.
I would suggest to keep your abbreviated name and promote the new products to your existing customers and put it on your website under your current name.
When we first started we wanted to take this same approach and it doesn’t work without alot of effort.
What phone numbers will you put down? Will you use one number and answer the phone with your current business name?
There’s alot to think about and you to really make the commitment.
If your worried people think your only in clothing change their perceptions.

ok my website was up and running but I removed it and thus it’s my old temp website that is on there while I reload my new one so it’s looking rather naff
I do use a landline and mobile for the business that is separate from my personal
I’ll load the other one up today at some point so you have a better idea

Also http://www.wilsign.com is taken already and I’d rather have the .co.uk and the .com of websites

Hi John
We had this problem when I started my company-which was clothing based, then, when we added another major item we gave our web site an ‘encompassing’ name i.e. equestrian, and then split the site into horse products and rider products. As you feel you are mainly known for your clothing, I think I would keep that as the main focus-initially, otherwise your clothing customers might wonder where you’ve gone 🙂
In other words, designs WITH signs rather than the other way round.
Have you thought of looking on the T shirt forum too for ideas?Barb
