  • Media for applying to a boat – help!

Posted by Louise Waters on 19 November 2008 at 13:11

I’m completely losing the plot with this one so am going to have to give in and call on your expertise.

Media for applying to the external of a boat – am I right or wrong that a cast vinyl would be best? If so, does anyone have any idea where I can get a chrome or mirrored finish? I’ve tried Metamark, Avery, Dorotape, Grafityp and what seems like a zillion others but no one has this.

If I’m headed completely down the wrong road what type of media should I be after?

Really appreciate any assistance you can offer!

Don’t quote me on this, but I don’t think a chrome finish is going to last 5 minutes in a marine environment.

Do seem to remember a thread a couple of weeks ago that showed a car wrapped in chrome, might be a supplier listed on there. If I get a chance I will have a dig. Don’t think it was a cast though
    🙁

    Hi,
we do quite a lot of boats, i would avoid chrome finish like the plague as when it gets in contact with salt it goes a dull gold and is absolutely horrible to remove!! Go with the best quality vinyl you can!!
Sun, salt, water pressure, fenders rubbing all do their best to attack your work!!

We also get boat owners to sign a disclaimer as many boat owners have boat cleaners who pressure wash / clean with abrasive greenies etc that can also reek havoc!

hope this helps and doesnt come across as too negative!

    regards

I used Grafityp specialty chrome on a yacht, and it performed fantastic, even for 3 weeks underwater when the boat sank.

Dead easy to work with and as long as the customer knows its not tested in marine environments then give it a go……….The yacht is currently being rebuilt and the vinyl is still on :lol1:

    Hey guys, thanks for the responses I really appreciate it;

Adrian – judging by the photos this is exactly what the customer is after. As is often the case, I think it’s going to be a case of whether his budget is big enough.

Dan – I will be sure to raise your points with the customer and thanks for raising the disclaimer idea, I will definitely go down this route if we get the order.

Graeme – the Grafityp vinyl you mention, do you know which vinyl it was? I spoke to Grafityp and they mentioned two.
