register a domain name……
Posted by Hugh Potter on 13 November 2008 at 12:03who do i use?
need to sort this today, asap.
thanks to my web girl i’ve lost my domain, luckily i have managed to put £2k’s worth of printed and virtual advertising on hold while this is sorted, the long and short is that some greasy twat in a suit (who only wears a tie to stop his foreskin sliding back up his neck) is trying to bend me over a barrel and have his fun, or i don’t get my domain, i’ve emailed him with a crap offer, take or leave, but in the mean time i want to grab another domain and use that,
so.. how and who with, do i register a domain name i know to be free?
thanks.

I’ve been using 1and1 for years. Use them for all of the work’s addresses & hosting…and for the personal ones.
£1.99 for .co.uk & £8.99 for .com…don’t pay anymore than that from anybody!
Free .co.uk & .biz if you use them for hosting too.
Basically you just type in names & it’ll check if you can have them & suggest close matches.

thank you everyone, i have just registered three new domain names with 1&1 for £23 😀
i won’t be held to ransom by mr greasy, however, i have knocked him down to £100 from £300 in light of the above information, and have offered him £75, take it or leave it.
just need to get my other domain transferred to me, the new web guy onto it and we’re away.
luckily i managed to put all the printed advertising on hold until this is sorted!
cheers.

I use 3ix and are very good, I had many hassles with 123 reg so moved over, you can host 3 sites on one domain for £30 a year and domains are only about £8 for 2 years I think.
There support is also very good and very quick.
cheers

out of interest, how does one set up their own server? i can see that a server is basically a computer with lots of storage, but i’m unsure whether i could have my own, or whether it’s even worth the hassle!

Hi Hugh,
Glad your getting sorted – How do you loose a domain, is it a case of someone stealing your name or was it yours originally and they didn’t contact you to renew.I’m only asking as I am new to this aswell and have 2 web domains, not sure if you renew them yourself or get a reminder letter.
BTW: i’m with Talktalk business for one (Crap) and 123 Reg for the other, which was cheap easy and fast to use.
Cheers John

I wouldn’t bother Hugh, as your using your bandwidth you may have 8 meg download but upload is on going to be a fraction of that along with all the other problems that you can get with servers being attacked and so on just isn’t worth it in my opinion.

With 1&1 John they automatically take the payment from your card when it is time to renew unless you tell them otherwise.

Cheers Steve, Got quite a bit of time left on them but didn’t want to loose them.

initially i didn’t buy my domains, my web girl did, as a result i never received a renewal notice, she said it should have come to my as she gave them my email for renewals, i never looked into things because she’d always say she was on top of things, but it turns out that the reason my site was down was because the renewal wan’t paid in june.
recently i told her to sort it or i’ll have all the passwords and take it elsewhere, so she took payment (direct to the hosts) and said it’d be a couple of days. next thing i know someone has my domain for sale and when i contacted them they wanted over 200+vat, the web girl said she had a receipt and all was sorted.
today i received an email from another bis telling me they now own it and do i want it, but the domain is now registered to the first person i contacted.
it all stinks of extortion to me but i’ve got it back at a 1/4 the original asking, so i guess i should be satisfied i haven’t totally lost it.

At least you’ve got it back – bunch of &*&&***$$%% :lol1:

Registering it for 10 years would have saved you that money, I use 123reg, and uk2, but will look at 1&1 now as well 123reg went absolutely useless on customer service but seem better now and more reliable they are run by pipex so should have their act together .

my web designer just replied, seems she’s been looking into this after-all 😳 😳
makes some interesting reading…

1 and 1 here too and not had much in the way of problems and when there was it got sorted quickly. I use their servers to host and I pay £5.99 per month, however due to the mail flexibility I also offer a local .biz email forwarding address for customers which now covers my costs :lol1:
It allows them to drop things like @aol, @btconnect, @Yahoo etc. Its just another little service I offer :lol1:

Ok hughs sorted but for anyone else looking I recommend freeola top service 😀

i recommend you never let your websites domain run out, or even get close. renew long before it’s due. these people use software which alerts them to websites that are due to expire, and keeps watch on them. if the website has any salable value they auto buy after 90days has expired and wait for you to ask for it back. there’s even quotes of them buying websites which were bought / transferred before the expiry.
-
That’s why I just let 1and1 auto bill me…the domain will NEVER expire.
They even give you notification if your credit card expires so you can update your details without automatically closing your account.
So far – 4 years and virtually no issues (except when they lost several servers in a fire – even then…24 hours and normal service resumed.
Dave
ps. would also recommend getting the .com and the .co.uk whenever you can. It’s at worst and extra £10 a year for peace of mind.
-
You can easily check the status of a name via almost any of domain websites but if you want to goto nominet’s site its http://www.nic.uk (no co) you can read there how to change tags etc.

yep, never let them run out… at the moment i got two running out but ones i dont care about… i suspect then get swipped.
i deliberately let one run out after being advised by nominet that it is not a good idea but was forced too by the system. It ran out and got it forced to return to public domain and within 15minutes it was swallowed by a domain searching company… i was stuffed

morally bankrupt slime is what they are.
-
No probs with 1and1 to date as i have mine on automatic renewal….touch wood, never failed yet!!!
-
its more of ‘what to do’ when u see domain renewals, my advise is to ‘get on with it’
-
like i said, this bloke ‘assumes’ that because one has ignored their website being down for 90+ days, thay they no longer want it.
i’ll stick to my theory that his tie only serves to stop his slimy skin crawling back up his neck to cover his head.
i noticed my site had gone in june, i was repeatedly emailing my web designer, who i later found had been ill for some time, i was doing everything i knew to try and get things moving, but it was only a chance conversation that led me to look in the right places, and discover the renewal was overdue.
i’d received nothing, as it’s not registered to me personally, i didn’t know how to find the host, etc. she was ill, had moved to hull, then back to sussex, so any paper renewal would’ve gone unseen, she swears she didn’t get any emailed renewals either.
either way, i doubt i’ll hear from mr clarke again, think i really annoyed his when i suggested it was an immoral business and i dropped the price again, it’s like having your car taken away by the police, quite legally, yet having to pay for it to be released from pound & delivered back, it sucks. hopefully when this blokes house is empty it’ll fall down, then he’ll discover a mistake made by his broker which leaves insurance null, that sounds about fair to me.
anyways, i’ll be setting up the site on a new domain later so it’s no loss now, just a few 1000 out of date flyers and a couple of hours altering logo’s is all it’ll cost me.
thanks for all your advice anyways.

For anyone else thinking of setting up sites and domains………keep your domain registration in-house even if you use a web designer or exterior host. My website is nothing to write home about, but I have TOTAL control over my domain names and I think more importantly my e-mail addresses as I have an infinite combination of addresses for each domain.

top advice!

Yup, is good advice. And it’s really very easy to set up a basic website(s) and enable email addresses.
If you go down the route of ‘web designer’ – they can supply you the website on CD and you just upload the files using a webdesign program that allows for ‘ftp’ transfers so they need never have any access or passwords…or just spend you rspare time on it after getting the initial concept running, gradually adding & tweaking over the years!

For people wanting a very simple – cheap programme to design websites goto http://www.wysiwygwebbuilder.com. you will be surprised how easy and feature rich it is.

Here is another site hostingdude.com very good cheap as plus you can buy a hosting package (with loads of websites)or you just keep adding domains to it and forward it to your own website
I.e http://www.yoursite.com(1)
http://www.anothersite.com(2)
http://www.onemoreforluck.com(3)and you can have them forwarding to http://www.yoursite.com(1)
Have you got your website up and running yet ?
Whats the domain name for it ?
-
HI Aaron,
we’ve got a front page and contact page up, though there’s still a fair bit more to do yet. it’s more an online portfolio ultimately.
my other site is currently being re-worked too, including a shop etc for products i make on a set price. i won’t go into that on here as it’s a niche market that i like being the best in!
i’ll pm you my sign website, don’t think we’re allowed to post our websites on here, unless you can see the www. button at the bottom of this post?
cheers.
Hugh
