    Hi Guys

i, just sold my 19 month old mimaki jv3 sp cos basically i couldnt
in the present climate, warrant paying over £3000 a year to hybrid for a maintnence contract. I am sourcing trade print vinyl and don’t plan on buying any new kit until at least the sign show next year, when we should start seeing both prices and vat. coming down, in the meantime i am thinking of training as a large format engineer.

    my experience
i am already training to rebuild xerox dc12 work stations and offer repair works up and down the M4 Corridor for a xerox leasing company who have 50 or more units out there nationwide, i now hope to start fixing large formats, mimaki roland etc.

I also bought 6 old vending machines on ebay and stuck them into a local steel company, which i get to repair on a weekly basis, alarms, cctv and door access sytems was my bag before i fell into signs, so i am a little bit handy i think!
I love repairing DC12,S and all my other stuff, but now long to set myself up as a freelance large format engineer covering the the M4 corridor from swansea to London.
does anyone know anyone who i can speak to get me started?
    any input most appreciatted!

how much did you get for the jv3, (i may be selling mine as an upgrade is needed)
And why did you not consider taking out a third party contract or an asset insurance?
or just not bother to have a service contract, and under write your own risk?It would have been an Ideal way to train yourself..AND how do you know vat is coming down?

    Hi Peter

How are you doing? long time no speak! it was a jv3 75 760mm wide i got £3000 for it inclusive of vat. would have liked about £500 more but a deal is a deal.

I would rather source out printing rather than end paying £1000 per head x 4 or £4000 a mother board, for bits that probably start off life at 50p each.

i plan on buying the new cjv 30 610mm but i think its going to rocket down in price next year. I dont think its wise running a mimaki out of warranty especially when the price of parts is being kept artificially high in the UK.

    Cheers

not sure where you get your prices from Simon, and would your argument apply to any equipment? or just Mimaki?
would you sell a roland or a gerber when the warranty was over?
    even after just 12 months?

    hi Peter

VAT is coming down to at least 15% and maybe even 12% on the mini budget (15th Nov ?) i would put a fiver on it at least coming down to 15%. I am pretty sure as well that machine sales are going to struggle like everything else in 2009, nobody like stockpiling imports, cost a lot of money i will put another fiver on them coming down at least a grand before the next show.

the CJV 30 600mm is up for £9,000 it is almost £3000 grand above the versacamm 30" i think they are going to struggle to sell the smaller versions and soon starting reducing them!.

not a good to time to buy, but to watch the market what do you think?

    prices from hybrid.

it makes perfect sense to sell, if you offset the price of a warranty package over 2 years compared to a £3,000 deposit and 2 years low rated finance i would be quids in refinancing a new machine. I just think that when bigger players than Mimaki and Roland, like General Motors etc are maybe set to go the wall, I predict there is going to be an awful lot of bargains out there next year, watch the sign show, it could be a great place for a bargain next year.

    Cheers

You are right as far as prices go, all technology comes down in price as time passes, so nothing new there.
what I find hard to understand, you have sold a perfectly good machine,
at a considerable loss on its original price, rather than use it to make more money, to invest in a new machine next year?

If we all wait for the price to fall, we would never buy anything, but while you are waiting, I will have made a considerable amount selling my wares, and my year end figures will show a larger profit % than not producing product, whilst hoping to save a couple of grand in capital expenditure.

    Hi Peter.

so if you run out of contract and have a nasty head crash, pump go down, error code or print heater problem which is a possibility after the 2 years.
    what would you do?

one reason i want to get into more repairs, in a recession i suspect more and more people will be keeping there machines longer and out of warranty.

I share you business sense, and should really hang on to the machine as a training aid if i plan to go into repair works but I do want to put the money in the bank to keep adding to so i can eventually buy new.

I have just roughly worked that it has cost me £48 per week over the last 20 months with a medium return at the end.
I share your sensible reasoning but I do not have the confidence to run it out of warranty especially when I have found someone in the short term to supply the same quality vinyls into me printed @ £12 a metre & vat.

    cheers

Simon. no disrespect, by the time you have trained to repair mimakis and other printers, and set up as a repair service the recession may well be over.

Yes I am happy to run my Mimaki out of warranty, if it has a major problem after 3 months it has already paid for itself, so i could bin it and buy a new one.

You sold yours for 4k. but if you ran it for a month trouble free, out of warranty you could easily earn that, and still have a residual value of £3k

    Peter
    Ps
£12 a square is not uncommon for trade print, but add laminate, artwork mods, contour cut, high res, and good quality substrate

and the 12 quid fades into the background….
