    Hello,

i am new to using Corel draw, and its driving me mad !!!!

i have a full trial version of X4 and have managed to cut some lettering using my graphtec CE5000-60, but now everytime i try to open a new file and create text to cut, on the right hand side of the screen in the object manager i can not unlock the grid, if i try to type in text a message comes up "operation cannot be completed, the active layer"grid" is locked or invisable" i have searched the help files but cant find out what to do

can anyone help, its so flustrating it keeps also saying it cannot enable Macros and then crashes, and also error 91

please can anybody help before i kill my computer!!

I suspect the problem is because you are using the trial version. The whole point of a trial version is to allow you to test out the features and functions of the software without giving it all away completely.

Usually trial versions disable the ability to save or print anything. When you think about it this makes sense as otherwise there is no point in having a trial version – If the trial version did everything you required of it – what incentive is there for you to buy the proper version.

Just click on the layer you want to be active……….then draw what you want.

The layer you want is usually called "Layer 1" by default

Fortunately the trial is the full version, Im running it now, however it is limited to 28 days use then it reverts pretty much to view only…….

i got a 15 day trial from the Corel draw website,
    i have 9 days left.

on the grid it has a red no entry symbol that just wont unlock, sorry to sound a bit dim but this is all new to me, 😮

Shouldn’t need to do anything with the "Grid", just make sure your active layer is "Layer 1" and you will be fine. The only thing you can do with the "Grid" is make it visible/invisible or alter its properties under "Tools" then "Options". This is who it also works in V12, only it doesn’t show the "No Entry" symbol, its just grayed out

Don’t know about x4 but for corel 6 or 12 if you have somehow selected grid as your active layer and placed it on top of any other layers then you will not be able to write on the viewed screen……. layers manager is where I suggest you look in to try solve your problem… make another layer your active layer and place this at the top…

    Good luck

I love Coreldraw but it’s always had a nasty habit of trying to fool you, but most people tend to get to a level that is fine for sign making applications or business cards or flyers or lots of other things and then don’t need the rest of it’s 1000s of functions.

Another thing about Corel is there always seems to be about a dozen different ways of doing the same thing.

I know other software is kinder to the user but once you grasp the basics it can function as said in so many different applications…

Also, although I have the likes of signlab and flexi and CS2 I stick to Coreldraw and photopaint for designing and signlab for cutting, if you tried to learn them all you’d soon find yourself five years older and very very confused….. :lol1:

Likewise I do all my designs and layouts in Corel, been using it that long Im not going to learn another similar piece of software. I cut direct from Corel, but export as ‘Ai’ (less text) and engrave from Engravelab…….

Sill learning Corel and there are so many useful tips popping up here all the time………. :lol1:
