is the bulk feeding system causing a printing problem?
Posted by Rod Gray on 24 October 2008 at 14:06Hi All,
B&P have been doing their best to dodge me on this problem. Before i go after them again i`d like anyone opinion on what you think might be causing this problem.

Where the red arrows are, it looks like there is some kind of ink starvation happening periodically across the print but for some weird reason it doesn`t seem to be just one tank thats doing it. As you can see, when it fades, it fades across all colours.
I`m getting close to the end of my warranty (2 months left) and would like this resolved but wouldn`t mind any feedback from you guys as to what you think it might be?.
I`ve tried swapping the bulk tanks for normal 440ml carts and still the same problem exists.
It`s very intermittant too. Real puzzler.

Just a shot in the dark Rod – but could it be the heaters playing up? This might explain the intermittent nature and the fact it is so random with the colours. Perhaps there is a loose wire causing the heating to fail and the platten to cool down then heat up again when the heater is back to full strength. I’m assuming that up until now the heads have been the main suspect and that you can find nothing wrong there?

static can cause that where the vinyl has touched the rollers.
have you printed any odd materials lately like pull up stuff etc.chris

For what its worth i think Chris is right,…I used to have this problem when printing banners,…Tried everything to sort it. Then i realised i used to wear adidas trainers which were well insulated and used to give me a lil zap everytime i touched a metal light switch fitting….Since not wearing the trainers it’s never happened since. strange but true!

Had that once. Bad batch of material happened half way through the roll for about 5 metres. Just random discoloration lines of varying widths.
Does this happen on all media?

Thanks for the replies guys,
To answer a few points raised ;-
It happens on all media i put through it.
The heater elements appear to be fine. I don`t see (or feel) them getting colder during prints)
Has anyone ever had any experiences of their bulk feed system no operating properly and has anyone ever been told that the bulk feed carts only last around 12 months before the rubber seals begin to go?.

hi rod
the cart rubber bungs can go over a period of time mate, but i was never told this before either. but they can and do go! the solvent progressively eats into this part of the cart.on your print issue…
i am certainly no expert on printing but just as a thought… it might be ink starvation to the heads. its often found when running prints in production/fast mode as opposed to quality/slow printing.
i think, could be wrong, but this was why the larger machines like the sol-jets and above introduced the large dampers as they hold more ink in the head so less top-ups etc
what it might also be is the dampers you have have gelled or clogged at the damper filter.
if you take the little pipe/tube off the top of your damper (on the colour tahts dropping out) then (carefully) slide off the damper from the heads manifold pin. (be very carful replacing this as you can spilt/crack the plastic manifold pin as it too gets brittle due to solvent on the plastic)
now tip the damper back and forward and have a look at the little silver foil type circular/oblong filter. any residue ink in it will roll back and forward but if you see small gunk particles on the filter the damper maybe clogged and not letting enough ink through to the head quick enough.
as i said, im certainly no expert but for the sake of a £25 damper and phone call to silverskies to send them out, it might be worth a go.alternatively you could call Ken McNight who doesnt live too far from you… http://www.uksignboards.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=5784
as for B&P support… don’t even get me started! 😉

if it was jv3 without bulk ink, i would say dampers blocked with ink starvation, however good ink will get through the dampers well but dodgy ink might bung up in dampers, but as your printing a lot of cyan then it should only effect that head, not all heads at once.
Is it pumping before it prints that line?
i35 at end of the week mcrod, come on down mate 😉

Solvent ink can/will gel if not in regular use Dave, not just dodgy ink mate.
there can also be contaminants in ink when topped up, bad batch/bottle etc various reasons i think…quote :if it was jv3 without bulk ink, i would say dampers blocked with ink starvationnot sure i follow dave, typo? blocked with ink starvation?

I’d go with the static thing….We Done about six banners with this problem
All with solid colours. But the problem don’t happen with vinyl. -
Well, well well….
It seems i owe you guys a huge debt of gratitude. (and a small apology) 🙂
When i first read the replies of "static electricity" i didn`t give it a second thought. I ignored you and kept trying other stuff.
As a last resort i decided to earth the machine using a wire screwed on to he chassis and in to the floor to ground.
Guess what?
Sorted :lol1: :lol1: :lol1:
Thanks a million guys, i would have never had thought of this and B&P certainly didn`t either.
Thanks very very much for the advice. 😉

See – you should listen to Chris – he knows what he’s talking about. :appl:
