Or maybe make a pounce pattern by drawing the lettering onto paper, going over it with a pounce wheel, taping that pattern onto your surface, and pounding graphite powder thru the holes. (you have to sand the back of the pattern with sandpaper) The graphite powder is placed in an old sock and the top fastened with tape.
You can also draw the lettering onto paper with a permanent magic marker (so it bleeds thru) tracing that on the back with a Stabilo pencil, wetting your surface, and rubbing the pattern onto it to transfer the lettering.
I usually just mark off top, bottom, and center lines and freehanding in the lettering. You get better at it the more you practice. If I am unsure, I will lightly pencil in the letters.
