  • what do I need for printing onto vinyls?

Posted by Adele Brennan on 3 September 2008 at 14:15

Recently started doing vinyls on vehicles and I have customers wanting photo type images on their vehicles. I don’t have equipment that does this. I just have a vinyl cutter at moment.

Can anyone tell me what my best options are as a lot of customers want this style. Don’t want to waste cash buying wrong equip and don’t want to lose business either.

Adele if you dont want to spend thousands on a printer then i suggest you sub any dig prints out to some helpful person in here, If you decide to buy a printer then you’ll more than likely have to invest in a laminator as well as the print wont last long on a vehicle just printed on to vinyl in our harsh environment.

I personally run 2 versacamms, 30" and a 54" and both are more than adequate for my needs. Be wary of buying second hand ones tho with regards to duff print heads and ask to see the printer printing before buying it. A 54" laminator will set you back a couple of grand unless you buy a hot melt one then you’ll be looking at another couple of grand on top.

I’m thinking I should sub work out first and see how much demand I get for this style of graphics – having an ID 10 T moment beforehand!!

Sorry Adele, hope i havent put you off!!! Possibilities are endless with a decent printer…not just vehicle graphics!!! They do need to be kept running to justify their costs tho, Also more maintenance if kept lying idle and more goddamn software to get to grips with but your in the right place when you need help.

I have a potential client who wants large trucks with vinyls and mugs and mousemats and clocks and calenders and loads more and I’m thinking…££££…then…. yikes…how am I gonna do this?

I really don’t want to lose the business but I need to be rational.

Well mugs, mousemats etc are printed using sublimation inks so you dont need a wide format printer for those….these are just normal inkjet printers with subli ink cartridges, you should be able to pick up one of these for a couple of hundred quid!
