  • what does everyone use for hemming banners?

Posted by Hugh Potter on 18 August 2008 at 08:46

    HI all,

just occurred to me, that the double sided tape I’m using to hem my banners, was around £25 for 50m, seems a little expensive to be wasting on banner hems, what do you use, how much and where form please??

    thanks.

Hey Hugh for the price it costs me to get my banners outsourced its just a bit more expensive then doing them myself with tape. No brainer really if you have the lead time.

that’s a fair point, and ordinarily i buy them in, i only really make white blanks here, and only keep a limited stock of banner material on rolls, 1.3m and 1.7m. if i only need a couple of 6×2 banners, it saves me VAT (tax), small order charge, and delivery charge (which itself can cost as much as the two banners!) so it keeps me competitive, if only a little busier than normal.

    cheers.

    Hi Hugh
I buy mine from Directa 01621 828882. The stuff I use is 25mm wide, I can`t remember the 3m code but its classed as a high performance tape and I`ve had no problems with it at all. The Directa code is 957309AVBU. I pay £6 per roll.

    Hope that this helps.

    Cheers

thanks guys, i’ll ring grafytip now, see what they do, it is a vhb type tape i’m using, wasted on banners, but all i’ve had to hand for the last couple I’ve made here.

    thanks.

£6 odd + vat from grafytip, there was a cheaper one, but considering the av’ge banner won’t use much more than a couple of quids worth at most, i’d sooner have the better one.

    thanks for all the replies.

i was going to say grafityp too… i remember seeing some on their product list magazine.

europoint have asked me to test a new one they are bringing out… havent seen it yet though.

i use tesa tape, been using it for about 4-5 years now for my banners and havent had a single problem yet.
that said i do use our heat welder for large heavy banners…

I got 2 rolls of the same stuff Hugh and I have to say its not the best, we did 3 banners and even though I cleaned the back I did find the bond took 2-3 days laying flat on the bench,if I rolled the banners the tape pulled away but after a few days it was fine, the banners were printed and luckily the customer was in no rush and I had the room, let me know how you get on. I will still use the tape but not for hemming Rich 🙂

    thanks Rob and Rich,

ROb, I currently use the tesa tape too, but it’s more of a vhb type and seems too expensive for using on banners, on a 3m x 1m banner thats 8m of tape, around a fivers worth, but… it does stick instantly, and once rollered down flat, it stays there, i usuall (have to!) roll banners up as soon as they’re made, and have yet to notice any problems with doing so.

Rich, i’ll give it a go and see what happens, if it turns out to be not so good, then i’ll reconsider using the tesa tapes, just need to find a cheaper source of it. trouble is, i’m competing against the £50 for a 8×2 fully digi printed banner type people, so i can’t be too much more expensive! i’m usually around the £4 per sq ft mark for simple single colour text on a white banner, so need to keep costs down without churning out crap!

i’ll let ya’ll know what i think of it. as i said thogh, this is the £6+ priced roll, not the £2.50+ roll, just thought that was way too cheap

Do you buy them in from the UK, or is there a local supplier. I’m looking for an alternative too.

    Regards, Roger

Halifax Vogel Group sell it Roger. The last lot actually came from their Adelaide office, so I’m guessing they’ll be worth a call for you 🙂
