  • Gerber Omega – Opinions Sought

    Hi all

When I was seeking advice on the Gerber Edge FX I received many replies commenting on the software – Omega.

The general opinion was that it was very quirky and many couldn’t get on with it.

I’m still seeking an Edge FX and I don’t want to make a mistake with software choice so any opinions, good, bad and ugly would be appreciated. Also, what are the alternatives?

    Cheers

I use the Omega software and find it very easy to use and does all I need. Spandex were doing a copy that you can use but not cut from. Might be worth a call to see if you can get a copy for trial purposes. I use this copy on a laptop to take to clients.
Having said all this I only use for cutting, might be better seeking an opinion of those using the edge

Spandex might give you a trial copy,as without a security dongle you can’t output anything except desk top prints!!

I run the latest omega and it’s spot on 😀

I found Omega nice and easy, I suppose it depends on what you are used to.

John, i used signlab with my edge2 it is expensive for the thermal pakage, not sure if it will run the fx though.
signlab has some nice features for thermal like ease of use for making one way vision and double sided stickers, dont know if omega or flexi have the same tools?

Thanks for the replies, all very helpful.

I emailed Spandex and this is the reply:

We used to do a demo disk when Omega 2.6 was released. These are no longer available; I have attached a shortcut below which will direct you to the Geber Website.

    Hope this helps.

    Many thanks

If anyone has a trial copy, please let me know.

To those who use different software with the Gerber Edge, how do you manage to get accurate cutting and do you use the Gerber cutter?

    Cheers

John you really need a sprocketed plotter to us with the edge, especially for long runs, The edge print only need one registration mark to cut accurately with a gerber plotter]
I dont think there is any any other software other than omega, flexi, and signlab that can run the edge.

You can download a demo of signlab I think, from http://www.cadlink.com and also view video demos

I’ve been looking for a Gerber plotter, not in to much of hurry as I’m ‘spent out’!

Meanwhile, I’ll try and use my Graphtec for very short runs – if that’s possible of course 🙂

John it is possible but not practical, trust me I’m a sign maker!

Have you acquired an fx? if not go for an edge 2 + plotter it should be about the same price for the 2 as an fx on its ownwithout any disadvantage.

the software is the issue you need to resolve first though, DO NOT buy an edge, unless you have software to run it, otherwis you may just as well buy a chocolate teapot

    John,

I bought Omega 2.5 (now upgraded to 2.6) when it was first released and have found it to be quite user friendly. I bought my Edge and plotter from Switzerland without software, but was unable cut successfully from Flexi as I was not able to find compatible registration marks.
Omega seems to be similar to other signmaking software, which makes it easier to get used to, but is geared more to the Edge and the use of foils for printing.
I checked my discs but the only thing I have is a presentation disc for omega 2.0, which is to highlight the benefits of Omega over Advantage. You are welcome to it if it might be of use. Just pm your address if you want it and I will send it.

correct u must have a sproketed plotter to cut your work on the gerber edge u line up a cross hair on the vinyl and output the job to the plotter we use graphix advantage software and it does the job well

John, I have to second Peter’s suggestion, don’t bother with the FX buy an Edge2 if you can find one, Spandex were doing reconditioned Edge 2’s with brand new plotters and discounted Omega not so long ago.
We use Omega but in all fairness I tend to produce most of the work in illustrator and then push across to Omega, there are some really nice extra bits in Omega though, any of the three mentioned are ideal but none are low cost, I think Omega was over £3K at one point (correct me if I’m wrong)
