  • are fluorescent tubes a consumable item or not?

A customer of mine – very loyal, very erratic & VERY, VERY annoying (think 2-3 calls a DAY when he’s got an ‘idea’).

Anyway – been ages since I complete the last job for him.

Get phone call for more work (OK)…but he wants some of the tubes changed in a lightbox I fitted 9 months ago. I’ll do it as a courtesy – as 2 or 3 tubes will be as cheap as chips…and just added to his next job :lol1:

But would you classify lamps as non-warranted items.

I think I’d be laughed out of the electrical factors if I brought back every tube or a starter that failed in less than a year. 🙄

Bulbs of any sort are consumables. Most come with and estimated lifespan in hours, but there are many variables that can dramatically shorten a bulbs life. Few come with a guarantee and are normally priced 2-3 times higher than a non-guaranteed bulb.

Yes they are cheap, but a nice to do as a business extra if you have the time. I also PAT certify light boxes as they are subject to the same regs. The course was £80, kit £450 and paid for its self many times over.

    Of course.

I put a large flexface up for some very good friends. I advised them to go for externally illuminated, but they were insistent that they wanted internal.

To replace tubes would involve the hire of the same fairly substantial truck mounted cherry picker that we used to erect thesign, and take at least half a day. I made it VERY plain that the cost of replacing tubes would be extremely high.
