Posted by Dan Osterbery on 30 July 2008 at 07:34Hi guys,
I have a client who has asked us to redo styling on his 6m sea ray, the original vinyl was stuck on in 92! I have tried graphityp vinyl remover and it didnt touch it! Heat gun didnt work either, can anyone offer anything that might get the old vinyl off???thanks

Try using a wallpaper stripper. This produces steam that you can direct onto the surface of the vinyl.

An MBX tool comes to mind but it might burn the glassfibre. I would run a test with it.
Paint stripper might be the only thing but the boat would have to be still a gel coat finish (not painted) and a test on an inconspicuous area carried out.
Removal will leave heavy ghosting of the graphics where they have protected the surface, so the new stuff must be fitted over the same area.

I have used our MBX on boats and it will do the job but like Peter says you have to be very very careful not to let it get too hot. Great on the pinstripes though.
Cheers

Expensive but an absolute necessity for some jobs like reflective and boat signs!

Just done a 30′ Beneteau, the boat yard removed the old stuff, but in addition to the ghosting there is also raised areas left where the vinyl was (adhesive must distort the gel coat). It was worst on the area where 10mm tram lines were removed and replaced with a single 40mm stripe.
I have used a paint on paste that cleans the gel coat, however you cant just do a little bit as it pretty much bleaches the gel. (fantastic stuff though)

Yeh, boats are a pain really.
Dan, make sure you use a good cast vinyl.
