why does my roland PC 600 break ribbons like crazy?
Hello,
Have had my PC 600 for about 8 years and bought is new. I have had 4-5 new print heads during the life of the printer.
Just had a new head put in about a month ago with a new foam roller. I’m breaking spot,CMYK ribbons on print jobs over the size of the print head … Can a warm humid room cause the ribbons to break more offten ?
I’m beaking ribbons only on specific art work in which the printer and printed fine in the past. It breaks ribbons everytime I print certain art work over the size of the print head.The room that it is in is 75-80 degrees and a bit humid in NC. I’m going to move the printer back to the first floor were is is cooler and not as humid. I have used Zero 9 and Roland Ribbons.
I know ribbon breaking can be a wide problem…the foam roller being the main issue is new. So anymore ideas would be great

as you have had the machine for a long time you know that its not normal for the ribbons to snap.
was it your regular engineer that fitted the new head and did the problem start soon after fitting, and have you asked them for there comments.
i know very little about the 600 but have had a 60 for around 11 years but if different makes of ribbon are snapping its the machine i would think.
with a new head comes a disk with a specific file that must be loaded to the 600 after the head is fitted, that file controls the way the head fires to prevent ribbon damage.chris

…thanks for the response. The printer started snapping ribbons about a month after the printer returned. On all the head replacements I have never received a disc. I called the tech company that replaced the head and they had me check the printer default mode. It was in the default mode since the other mode can make the head fire hotter and print more detail but has a chance of snapping ribbons more.
Someone from a ribbon company said to reset the printer in the default mode that might fix it or reset the machine again??
I called Roland and they had no idea how to set the machine in default mode. They did give directions for carriage alignment directions. Unknown if this will work have not tried..
Will move the printer this weekend in the cooler environment and if that does not work then I will send it back to the tech co.
The tech company is gone for two weeks so I’m trying what I can.
Your right I do not think it is the ribbons.

by rights the tech should have given you the disk to keep in case it ever needed to be reloaded during the life of the head. but that never happens in real life.
a local sign shop contacted me the other week with the same problem after a new head was fitted still looking in to that one.
the room temp should not make much difference except if really cold and the head has a over temp cutout.
unfortunately i think you tech needs to have another look for you

I had a similar problem a few years ago and it turned out to be the ribbons – I had been using some third party ribbons and it happened to dark green and navy in particular (stuffed the head too!). When the printer came back I stuck to Roland ribbons and had no further problems.
