    Hello All,
This is my first post so please forgive me, if its not up to scratch.
We are a signwriting firm that has been going since 2000 in menorca (spain). Last year we bought a versacamm 540, and it has revolutionised the signs in menorca, we were never offered a laminator?? I have been reading a few posts and am noticing some fading and scratching on some of the older jobs we have done, and now realise we NEED a laminator.

Any advice on which make or model? or which ones to avoid, I guess we will be using it for vehicle graphics and boat graphics mostly…

Would you generally advise laminating anything printed??

We in menorca are generally behind the rest of europe on the technology front and I do not want to be offering our clients shoddy print jobs that dont cut the mustard!

    Thanks for your time!

vehicles, boats or anything were abrasion and chemical attack may occur definitely needs laminated unless very short term. i.e. several months.

you can get away with not laminating some shop fascias because they aren’t being washed regularly and don’t really come under any form of attack other than UV light. but for piece of mind its always best too…
ide definitely advise laminating if the sign is south facing or you live in the likes of a warm country. most good laminating vinyls have UV protection properties which add to the prints life.

Hi Dan, if i were you, i would go for a hot top roller. Not sure if i can mention any brands on here as I’m new also. You will find laminaters come in handy when covering panels also.

Hot roller may not be any advantage, especially as you are in a warm climate anyway, most vinyl laminates are fine done cold.
but at the end of the day, its down to the type and variations you can offer to customers, and how far your budget can stretch.

What are the differences or advantages between laminating with heat or without??

I think I read somewhere that you need heat when using a two part wrapping system the temperature effects the adhesive??

I do not want to buy a laminator and then find it doesnt do what we want it for or it is redundent in a few years…if we start to get wrapping business

    cheers

Dan, a company called Daige make a manual liquid laminator, very cheap ($au1500) and extremely cheap to run. They also make an electric model, but its 5 times dearer. Good for everything from wrap material to Banners. I’m considering buying one for my banner work.

Might be worth checking it out. Other than that, plenty of laminators on the market that are tried and tested. I use an Ezy Taper myself, but SEAL is also popular in Europe, and they do very good machine too. Both aussie made….. 😉
