Karen, you dont need cast, except for its normally longer life, but in fact any vinyl may be a bad choice,
To get a good looking result will be very difficult because of the trim around the joins and the door panels, a respray is really the way I would go. and will probably work out pricewise at a similar cost to a wrap, given the prep work you will need to do.
To remove the old vinyl is probably going to be a real pita, as it is so old it may have lost any pliability and will be very brittle. You may need to invest in an MBX, but an expensive tool, and no guarantee that the surface will be left smooth for the new vinyl.(mbx)http://www.jagsignsupplies.com/aqshop/catalogue.php?id=14
I added the pic so others could see the Winnie, and give their thoughts

peter do you not think i can just use avery 600 or something, the bodywork is immaculate other than existing stripes, he is removing all seals and extra doors so that leaves me with a lovely flat surface and just a few long stripes to remove that are quite pliable still i have looked at them he only wants the van to look good for about 3 years and i have measured approx 30m and he is my hubbys mate difficult i know what do you think blimey pete how did you add my pic to this forum, thank you, i thought i had done that sorry still learning how to use the site

Karen the only problem area will be over the cab, and perhaps the bumper, if you need to do it in one piece, oracle 751, or better still 851 would be a good choice as it has a nice finish, but it does stick like you know what, so care and a bit of experience would be needed,
Mac 9800pro would probably be a good alternative, but has more of a dull aluminium finish as does the avery. Rather than a metalicPeter

peter can i apply the oracal wet see all i have used so far is either avery 600 vinyl or avery cast sorry to sound so simple bit of a difficult one for me cast would be easy as so pliable but dont think i need that as you say but then dont want to look daft either i would actually feel more comfortable wrapping a van in cast 🙄 oh and he definately wants metallic as close to a volkswagen van as i can get

Nowhere near experienced enough on that type of job to give advice 😳
but….. as for removing the old graphics, I can see that being a bit of a nightmare, as Peter has already said, it will more than likely be very brittle.
Personally, I would recommend a re-spray rather than a wrap. A good re-finishing shop would bosh that out in no time. Only my opinion mind as like I said, not brave enough to tackle something like that and dont have much hair left to pull out if I did have a go! 😮

I would have thought the body was aluminium. You can’t use an MBX on plastic and it might even burn glassfibre panels.
I’m sure what you would have to charge to make this job viable would be beyond that of a decent repaint. -
Get some heat lamps. Panel beaters use them. You want to warm up the graphics not make them hot hot. Around 30-40 degrees. You should be able to touch the body still.
If its a hot sunny day leave it outside to warm up.
It should be a lot easier to strip if the vinyl doesn’t break into little pieces.
There’s a product in the states that apparently makes it easier to remove vinyl. I haven’t had the chance to try it out yet. Rapid remover or something like that I forget the name.

got the old graphics off with help frtom a mate who actually does resprays what a laugh (he doesn’t want to touch it) so its left to me but anyway clean bodywork now but seems like similar to abs plastic tried a small sample of oracal cast silver metallic and its very very pliable not like wrapping with avery printed media over laminated now i am really confused i think i am going to just try and wrap the back first, got 5 metres to start and see how goes, got 2eek ol to look forward to first thank goodness

Karen, which oracle did you go for?
751 and 851 are both good for what you need, but are not re positional
like a wrap, so it needs to be laid down right first time, not a lot of room for error, anyway good luck, keep us updated on the progressPeter

ok thanks peter for your advice much appreciated I am going to get my uncle to help me he is used to doing vinyl on 40′ lorries mind you he’s not so keen now I told him it is cast as he’s never worked with this before. Will show you end product hopefully when back of hols, doing winnie on the 22nd July speak then thanks again I am going to stick with the 851 metallic oh buy the way I gather from your vast experience I assume I have no alternative with this job other than to use this oracal 851 to achieve the results the customer wants (oh well i will give it a try I do like a challenge) :yikes:
