White spots on print area (VP540)
Posted by Simon Polakof on 18 June 2008 at 05:22Hi everyone!
I seem to have a problem with my Roland VP 540. I get white spots when I print large images. I have rinsed the prinitng heads from threads, but I have some very small ones that I can’t reach(they are tucked between the rubber and the metall). I’ve cleaned it about 20 times and I still get white spots . I’m also sceard that if I keep trying to get them out, I will damage the print head.Ps. I also use an alcohol solution to clean the surroundings of the heads(rubber), but they get just as dirty on the second print.
Can anyone help my, I’m about to start loosing customers?
Thanks

Welcome to the boards Simon, what material are you using?
I had a similar problem with Rijet recently. Its more likely the material than the heads.
-
I was told that the problem was probably some small threads that where stuck in the printer head. I also though that it was the material at first, but seeing that it’s the same material I used before I got the problem. I ruled that theory out.
What was your problem, the material?
PS. I use AVERY MPI2900 -
welcome
i am with shane contaminated material if the dots are like small craters where the ink is actually repelled.
also happens when water or cleaning fluid has been sprayed near by
just try any other vinyl

Sounds like dust on the media. Do the white spots mostly occur in areas of heavy ink?

PS. I use AVERY MPI2900I used several rolls of Rijet, then 10 metres from the end, I got faint white lines appears in the heavy print areas.
Everyone told me it was everything but the media. It became really consistant, so was able to reproduce it for the reps.
Finished up finding out that their were a few complaints in oz about the same problems. They’ve withdrawn this shipment from the market I believe. I was asked to try another media (Oracal 3551) and no problems.
I’d try another media, printing the same file, see if it is replicated.
The problem with dust on the heads is more caused by static. If that is an issue, atomise some water in the room, see if thhat helps. Are you printing on carpet?

Well the problem always seems to lay in areas of heavy ink.
I was thinking about what you wrote Bill, about the dust, but it seems highly unlikely since the rolls are new and unwind.
I’ll guess I’ll try out all the tips I got from you guys! Thanks! -

Simon, is the problem like this? We had the problem for several months. I’m also with VP540 with Bordoe inks. You can see the solution we made. It appeared that the whole set of inks had water in it. With the new set the problem disappeared (at last). If you think its the same, call me on skype:kreator_bg

Hi Ivan!
The problems seems to be the material itself! I believe that every time the rollers turn and more material is unwind, then an electric charge occurs and dust is attracted to the material. Or this is the only reasonable explanation I can come up with to tell you the truth, due to the fact that I don’t get the same problem on the other materials. And It always happens in the ink heavy areas!! I’m loosing my mind!! It’s so disturbing to give away a job that one is not satisfied with.
Maybe for the heck of it I’ll try rinsing the color tubes. -
I more or less had the same problem, with us it was dust, we had a new carpet nylon and I think it gave a static charge to the material this was then taking bits off of clothing and hence causing the same white dots. Even worse was the dog hairs that then got transported onto the heads. I really need to replace the carpet with lino sometime.

Hi Mart!
I’m guessing that you now solved the problem? By the way did the dot’s only occur on some materials or in pretty much all? -
They would appear in pretty much all. Especially heavy print areas. It was interesting that at one point if any of the grandchildren went near the printer while in operation ( they like to get too close ) you could see where during the print it happened because of the increase in speckles in the print. I could not send out anything that was not 100% perfect and so ended up throwing away alot of material. I am more aware now and always wipe off the first few feet, don’t do anything in the workshop that might create dust and make sure my clothing is lint free. The other thing that used to happen is that when laying them down I would have what I thought was a perfect print and then wipe the squeegee over them the overprinted dust particles would be wiped off leaving white speckles over the prints. I get perfect prints 99% of the time now.
Mart.
