Help please need 11.5m long 40mm wide stripe for boat
Just got back from a customer enquiring about a colour change on a yacht. The main sticking point I have is applying an 11.5m long stripe that is 40mm wide on a complex curve i.e. the surface curves on 2 axis’s. (Front to rear and top to bottom)
First question, is there a supplier of a reasonably accurate 40mm stripe that length suitable for a hull. Colour required is silver.
Secondly, the material choice for something that will conform to and follow parallel with the existing line. I currently have a 7yr 300 series silver from Grafityp???
I have a Jag III Plotter and it will track to a reasonable accuracy over that length if I have to cut this myself.
Any suggestions greatly welcomed.

Graeme, any good vinyl should be ok. when you cut it, leave enough backing paper to allow you to apply the app tape and cut parallel to the gap needed, then start at one end and expose a metre or so of the stripe, and use the edge of the app tape as a guide, thats how I would do it,

Hexis cut rolls to any width so that would be easier than trying to cut an 11.5m strip out of a wide roll. I don’t think many cutters will track that accurately for that length.

Most good ones will, providing the media is square to start with, and you use a slowish cut speed, both my graftec and mimaki would have no problem, but obviously you would end up with a less than standard width piece of 11m vinyl

- 2 x 11m x 40mm
multiple 2m ish x 40mm
multiple 3m ish x 15mm
Couple of small graphics and a couple of logos
If I end up cutting myself, I wouldn’t waste too much vinyl by carefull placement on the vinyl, (after all I am Scottish!!! :lol1: ).
Off to measure up tomorrow and count all the shorter sections. Thanks for the advice so far………………………

Graeme, 3M and Avery both do Cast tape in stripe material, 25mm and 50mm wide as standard sizes. They come in 22.5 and 47m rolls. 6mm and 12mm come in 45 mtrs rolls only
Might be worth finding a stripe supplier in the UK. Cheryl T may see this, I know she does lots of boats and buys the material too.
Its big business here, surprised if you don’t have access to it in the UK. May be worth a call to a few suppliers that specialise in the auto trade?

I always understood that cast vinyl had to be used if constantly exposed to salt water.

As far as I know, 3M 7725 and 3M 7125 are the only ‘certified’ cast materials for boats. The others, like Oracal, I believe have fine print to state that it has to be x distance from the waterline, or warranty is void..
Not sure, but worth checking I guess.
