  • Is it ok to cut letters in vinyl that arent vectors?

I’ve been spending quite a bit of time turning letters and numbers into vectors before cutting, but i wonder if this is necessary? I did a few tests just turning popular fonts into outlines in Corel x3 and sending them straight to cut, the results on the first 2 were excellent, but on the third cut (using same font, arial i think it was!) one letter did not cut out very well at all, i wonder if this is just chance, or if its some problem relating to the font? Thankyou!!.. Mark

Do you mean that you turn everything into outlines before sending them to cut? I dont think this is necessary, i use Flexisign and have never had to do this, all truetype fonts are already vectors ( this means they are made up of lines not pixels like a Jpeg) and are all ready to cut.
Some fonts can be a little dodgy especially if they are from a free download.

True Type fonts on a PC were never designed for anything beyond viewing on screen and printing at typical page sizes.
Most times they will be OK but zoom in close on the one which cut badly and you will probably find that it is ragged with far too many nodes.
I use Signlab which has specifically designed fonts for sign production at large sizes.

That’s brilliant, thank you both for the kind, helpful and fast replies!

All fonts are in a vector format so can be scaled to any size. We have thousands of true type and type one fonts and most are perfect for sign making. But occasionaly one will be imperfect (Garamond) with out of shape letters. We use Flexisign and would not waste money on expensive sign making fonts. If you use a new font just cut out some small letters to see if it cuts ok.
