how do i make a hardened glass workbench please?
Posted by TimDouglas on 6 June 2008 at 21:53Hi all, I’m setting up a new workbench and am making it 8ft x5ft like the demonstration on the front page, I was wondering if anyone has any photos of what it will look like? the guy building it for me is worried about support on such a big sheet of glass,The glass supplier said good luck on trying to get it level? I would also like to see how it is lit underneath as I would like some advice on how many lights I will need etc. Any info on it would be good.
Thanks

I just read some posts about others doing it,sounded good. Will it help with layering graphics? Whole new workshop being kitted out by a kitchen company so want to do it right.

well you could support it by putting a 10m sheet of acrylic under it, thats not going to sag very much, just rout the top of the table out to adjust for 10mm + whatever the glass is.
otherwise just use thinn crossbeams, it wont affect the light very much but will give support -
It will help layering graphics mate, but then i would advise not to layer graphics prior to installing as it will cause a halo of small bubbles. 😕
Glass is a good worktop as far as it stays smooth but it will have to be a toughened or laminate glass with polished edges and that isnt going to be cheap. ide guess about £150 for the 8’x5′.
this could cause problems If the bench is an all-rounder. by that i mean for general sign work, constructing frames, rivetting, hammering etc
i am not knocking it… i just think it is limited and costly. -
yes tim i am considering similar at present i have a 6x 3 glass top and prefer working on it, what thickness glass and have you considered the weight of it.
i would like it to be a light box but think only a area of 4×2 at one end would be adequate.

Im lucky enough to be in a unit joined onto a kitchen company who are kitting it out to my spec, I have 6mm laminated glass priced at local shop at £100.( 8ftx5ft) He tested how hard he had to hit it with a hammer to break it which i was impressed with . I don’t mind paying as i have been using polypro on the bench at the minute and after doing 5k stickers for the NW200 cutting them by hand made a mess of some off them due to the cut lines. The guy building it wants to put supports and divide the bench into 4. Then i could put 4 lights into it. As for doing other jobs i will have two other benches, smaller but will do.

I have a 3600mm x 1200m glass top bench, 6mm toughened glass with safety edges, on a timber frame and 16mm mdf tabletop with a cross beam at 1200mm and 2400mm made out of 70mm x 35mm studs.
My last one I had a hole cut out the MDF 1100mm x 400mm at the far end with a light shining through the glass to lay up muli layer signs.
Solid as a rock.

same here, two 6ft x 3ft 6mm toughened panels, no probs, you should see the amount of junk i sometimes put on it,
i flood coated mine with regular white vinyl (works a well as transluscent) and then sat the glass on 4/5mm thick glazing foam, a double sided tape, the beauty of the vinyl underneath is that should the worstest happen then the majority of the glass it held on the vinyl.
just make sure you protect the edges by recessing the glass in, i’ve have well over 150kg on it, dropped hammers and tools onto it, all sorts, but it broke when a metal ruler lightly tape one end of the glass, BANG !
