New cutter
Posted by Mike Robson on 5 June 2008 at 15:28Decided it’s about time to upgrade to a bigger cutter.
I’ve read through the myriad of topics about which one to buy, but what I’m really after is what sort of price we should be looking at paying.
We’ve had a 800 wide Omega for 3 years now with no problems, and we’re going to simply buy the bigger version of that, but our suppliers don;t have them any more – only the Foison ones which are a bit too cheap and cheerful by the looks of them.
On the other hand, someone just said £4,500+VAT for a Mimaki one which seems a bit OTT.So… after that rambling, how much should we be looking at paying for a fairly decent 48" (or slightly bigger) cutter?
Thanks
Mike

I like the look of the Graphtec FC7000 Mk2.
I tried one at the show and it was stunning.
Around £3000 + Gordons Vodka And Tonic. -
1st choice summa s class T then i woke up and bought a fc7000 130

You generally get what you pay for.
Have used Roland, Graphtec and Summa.
Presently on a Summa D120 and it’s basically bomb-proof. Tracks like a charm .ie. doesn’t run out at all even on 4m+ runs after 4 years of continuous use. Not exactly the latest model, but as it now costs half what it did when I bought it – great deal!
I know mimaki are well renowned for build quality too as are more of the other major brands.
I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend a Summa or a Graphtec even if they do cost a little more than some others.
£3k will see something good…any more will just see ‘enhancements’ in operation & more features.

all of the plotters mentioned are good, I have a graphtec and a mimaki but if your budget is limited, look at signpal from grafityp, good machines, and a bit cheaper, I had one and it worked full time for 5 years without problems,

I bought my Mimaki plotter about 6 years ago ………. or thereabouts, paid around £4k or so back then.
It was worth EVERY penny.
It’s had one problem last year that I got fixed and that is it. Tracks perfectly, cuts perfectly and I think I’d be hard pushed to consider any other cutter from now on.
Previously had a Roland – another decent plotter
Also a Signpal – bad move 😕You get what you pay for. 😀

I use the Summa S-class. Fantastic machine. I’ve also started using my old Summa D610 again which I bought in 1997. Both machines run spot on
every day. The S-class was £4995 and the D610 was £2000 if I remember rightly. Both worth every penny. I’ve never bought a cheaper machine as I need reliablity and with these you get just that. -

Lynn, not sure if you didn’t get the pun or you came back with another one?

Thanks for the input guys. I’m gonna have a closer look at some of them.
The 15m guaranteed tracking that some of them offer is not too important – we very rarely do any runs over about 3m.
Think ours was about £1500-£2000 3 yrs ago, so £3k is probably about right. -

thinking of buying mimaki
any bad points to think of -
I havnt found any, it really boils down to who you but from, and what discount you can negotiate. Most of the reputable makes, will give the same sort of built quality and reliability.

so is`a mimaki cg60 /sl/sr a good buy at 800 plus vat
with fine cut software -
Its up to you to decide which make and model you finally choose,
if you have found a plotter within your budget, and are happy that the supplier has given a fair price compared to others, then go for it.
deals do vary between suppliers, and some are better than others in the help and service department.
Top end plotters are all similar with their own slight different features.
sorry I cant advise one or the other. -your choicePeter
