Is it possible to run anti virus from safe mode?
Posted by Harry Cleary on 3 June 2008 at 19:21My wifes laptop has contracted a virus which closes the computer down as soon as you try to boot. Is it possible to run anti virus from safe mode? If so how?

you should be able to run it from safe mode Harry. Safe mode just runs the minimal drivers to get it going ………….

downloading one now, the one she had from the ISP wouldn’t run 🙁 Hopefully it will sort it out, the nagging is getting unbearable! 🙁 🙁

I have downloaded two anti virus programs and they both stop midway through because of an ‘error’
I am running in ‘safe mode with networking’ anybody know of another way to run these? -
Can you boot up from another drive – e.g a CD rom rescue disc? Then you can take action to remove the virus
What operating system are you using?

I’m covered in cigarette ash, and burns (she is sadistic!) 🙁 AVG and her ISP anti virus won’t install in safe mode, the disk drive is broken. AVG keeps saying another anti virus is installed but in program files there is nothing. Then it says ‘something bad has happened, error xxxxxxxxx etc’
Can I do anything using a usb stick?
Help please!!!!!!!! All of a sudden it’s my fault and I should have told her to re-new her anti-virus 😮 😮
My communion money is under threat!!:D 😀 😀Using XP

an error of that sort harry…usually means its a bit of hardware, ram, disk as you said or graphics card, taking them all out and re-installing one by one, usually eliminates the problem 😉
and if that is iffy …well it sounded good eh 😉

at leat it’s a ‘stay of execution’ Nik…thanks
If I die as a result of this I am gonna haunt Lambie, Williams and Normington………..who should be helping me, instead of wittering on about ghosts!!!!!! 😀 😀 😀 -
Harry
BOOAny way lets just backtrack a little,

Well what else could it be?……………you get a dialouge box saying the computer will shut down in 59 seconds and it does……..and you can’t do anything else………like ctrl alt delete to see what is going on. -
Well if it’s any consolation Harry I keep having problems checking in to posts tonight and that’s straight up.
-
Probably not a virus Harry,
can you boot in safe mode?Peter
-
Yes……….thats how I’m posting now. Is Nik right, do you think?
-
Nik could well be right,
it does sound more like a hardware problem to me, but I am no expert, I dont even believe in ghosts….Peter

I think nik is right too, and I don’t believe in ghosts either. Might be a pattern here 🙂

Hey bud,
I’m a Microsoft Tech and can help you out if you still have a problem…
Carl.
P.S. It does sound like a virus, if it were hardware you would usually get an earlier warning in the POST test on boot up.
The virus is probably in memory so runs as soon as you turn the power on.
-
Still has the virus Carl, she has been using it in safe mode all week. I can’t seem to get any anti virus to run in safe mode.
-
Could try Mcafee stinger Harry, don’t know if it will work for you but worth a try. it’s also free.

Hi Harry,
Firstly bud, it’s not really a good idea to run 2 versions of antivirus. It’s a common mistake if you are, but they tend to conflict in the computer registry and cause more problems than they solve. Same goes for spyware software, they also can cause lots of conflicts.
With regards to to your problem, it could be a number of single things or a coming together of many things.
So, what we need to go is get a detailed version of events…
Boot XP up normally and let me know what happens, also make a note of any error codes that are shown, these will help identify the problems.
Initially, it sounds like a worm virus or something similar, the ‘countdown’ is a symptom of the good old ‘MSBLAST’ virus.
Take a look here and see if this helps you determine whats wrong…

Steve; tried the stinger last night but no luck….thanks for the tip though.
Carl, that dialouge box (NT/Authority) on that page is exactly what you get when you boot XP normally, I won’t be able to try the removal until lunchtime though…..thats if I get any lunch! At least she can’t buy a new one online in safe mode!! 😀 😀 (why do I want to fix this again?????? 😀 😀 😀

lol Harry,
Computers, who needs ’em !!
You should get a disk with a virus on it, then when the Mrs says anything about shopping just stick the disk in the drive and ‘ Voila ‘ instant money saver.
😀

This might be related to an update of Service Pack 3 for XP. Check this article out to see if it sound like it could help.

Problem solved Carl!!!! The link you posted sorted the problem. Thanks a lot. And thanks to everyone else as well.
I’m now trying to install AVG but it keeps saying that McAfee components are still installed and stops the download. I cannot find those components and when I go into uninstall the program list is empty. Would this have anything to do with the removal proceedure?
-
Well Done Harry.
One down.
AV Software is notorious for leaving bits behind after uninstalling and can cause some real headaches.
Have you uninstalled via the Programs list, or have you used Control Panel > Add/remove ?
If you have uninstalled fully either way and it’s still got something left, then chances are its a service running or an ‘orphaned’ key left in the registry.
The registry is a dodgy place to mess about with bud, so i’m afraid that i’ll have to leave you to that one – you can quite easily mess your XP installation up playing in there.
Best thing to do, is to either try re-installing, then uninstalling again – or to use google and see how others have cleaned their systems.
It’s not an impossible task at all, and with a bit of digging, i’m sure you’ll find others that have been in the same boat, and more importantly, how they solved it.
Good luck.
Carl 😀

Cheers Carl. You’re just afraid she’ll come round and beat you up! 😀 😀
