Pretty new to the digital printer side of things.

We are running a mild solvent machine so we are getting good results without lamination but we still feel that when you place a print on a vehicle it must have lamination.

We are currently using a product from clear star coatings which we are happy with.

Unfortunately we are not happy with the application results. They are not terrible but were are apply by hand and you can never guarantee a good even coat with a nice smooth texture. It always seems to be visible when you look at the print from an angle. We see overlap lines etc. We are using a sponge roller with a velvet like covering im not too sure what they are called. We tried ordinary sponge rollers but they seem to give off a few bubbles sometimes.

Because of our small quantities there is no way we can justify a automatic machine laminator.

We have seen a manual one that you just pull the media through it call a Daige. Do any of you guys use them and how do they work.

It seemed a bit expensive though. Equ 800pounds for a 1500mm wide.

Is there any other options or do you have a magic way of applying it by hand successfully.

    £800 is not expensive…
don’t look at the lamination as an expense but an investment. sell lamination as an extra form of abrasion, chemical and UV damage prevention and charge more for it!

as for wet lamination… only one i ever looked at was from B&P.

I agree with Robert, Invest in a cold laminator .
Liquid lamination is nice but messy. It dries to touch but you liquid laminated prints could stuck together and gives you headache. Unless you have large space to allow them to dry properly. You also have to stay away from complex curves. I once looked at the 54" seal sign coater. Fantastic unit, I almost buy one

am i right in saying that cold laminators apply a film to the top of the vinyl.

and you buy the film form vinyl suppliers like avery or orajet.

how much does lamination cost per sqaure metre

Yes it is pressure sensitive self adhesive film on top of the vinyl. I am using Orajet/orafol, 3M and also Mactac

I also use my laminator to mount prints of Acrylic, Foamboards wood and aluminum composite up to 1" thick. So that is an advantage over the liquid laminator

surely the laminate cost a lot more than a liquid.

i just did not want to go down the whole cold laminator road. thouhg it would be a pain and a costly exercise.

i dont want to spend too much money on this because i dont need to use it all the time. I would say i would need to laminate maybe twice a week.

Thought that liquid would be the better option.

it looks though now i will have to rather go the cold laminator route.

What do you think is a good entry level cold laminator.
