cheaper alternatives to vinyl adhesive remover?
Posted by Martin Manley on 24 April 2008 at 13:40Anyone got a cheaper alternative to the branded vinyl adhesive removers currently available? The 3M stuff is great but mega expensive! Obviously it’s just a chemical in a branded can/carton – anyone know what it is ,so we can buy it direct from a chemical distributor?
cheers

Yeah, I’ve used the Wurth stuff – not as good as 3M but still expensive…

Martin,
I use the autoglym tar and adhesive remover – seems to work well for old vinyl glue. The local autoglym franchisee delivered free if I remember (check autoglym website for their local list) – 5 litres was about £16 or so I think – much cheaper than if you got it from halfords or similar.
hope helps

Sounds more like it to me, Martin.
When you think about it, your basically doing the same job; removing gunk from vehicle bodywork, so it’s probably the same chemical…
Thanks

I use Rapid Remover.
It’s not the cheapest but it is the best.
I’d rather pay more for something that is easier to use.
I don’t care for the 3M stuff (aerosol can?)
Thought it made a huge mess.

Autoglym tar remover is one of the best glue removers I have come across. There is a similar product sold by the Neilsens franchise – This dissolves glue very quickly. If you spray it on – leave for a minute or so – you can then scrape it all off using an applicator.
Another point to note is that as many glues are oil based they will easily dissolve using petrol – mind you, if you live in Scotland, petrol is hard to find just now – so maybe just use the autoglym tar remover:-?

ive been using tar and glue remover for about 10 years, maybe more… best cheapest you can get, i think… what i will say is… from an H&S side of view you should wear eye protection using it. My dad was wiping down a vehicle. he sat the bottle down pretty quick on the ground while kneeling and a small splash spat out the bottle top on impact. he was instantly blinded in both eyes from a "tiny" drop… to the point we had to send two drivers out to get him, one to drive the other to bring his car back. after some hospital treatment his sight came back about 24hrs later and made a full recover a couple of days later. could have been much worse though… we still use it today but obviously very carefull. 😕

I use engine degreaser from my local motor factors. Around £10 for 5 litres. Works just the same as any other glue & tar remover I’ve ever used, but is water based, so a quick rinse with water & the panel is super clean & grease free – perfect for applying new decals.

Thanks Guys & Girls
Lots of good cheap alternatives there…I like the sound of the water based product

Would of said just use petrol out side bur with the price of it at the moment, would be cheaper with 3m stuff

really stubborn stuff like a few others auto glym tar and glue remover
or if really bad carb cleaner try a bit first as if the paint is soft it will take it offDerek
-
petrol
and then scape it off with a squeegee or piece of 1mm ABS

I’ve been using White Spirit for the best part of 14yrs.
Cheap as chips and works a treat. -

Hi All
Rapid Remover is really good but we’ve just come across a product from a local company that is ridiculously strong. We are still using up our stock of Rapid Remover and use the new stuff as the last resort for the really stubborn stuff, then we’ll switch to the new stuff all the time.
Cheers

Doh! helps if I include the name, Espuma Cleaner Solutions is the company and it’s called Rubber Remover. Google ’em or PM me if you want their details.
