help please with getting my new pc running smoothly?
Posted by Hugh Potter on 22 April 2008 at 10:06hi all, finally gone to a desktop again, so have a few questions which will hopefully get everything running smooth asap.
first question..
with the 22" monitor, everything is stretched slightly sideways, which is the best screen size / resolution for me to set? an A4 sheet in corel looks more like a box! text is also a little blurry to read, i’ve only had a few hours sleep since setting it up last night, and it’s giving me a headache now!
second….
the screen has two inputs on the back to the tower, one it the traditional type, the other is a very clever looking gold plated jobby, the diagram showed using both, but should i? or just use one?,third,
using xp pro, when i fire it up, it sometimes takes a while to properly wake up, everything loads up fine, to my knowledge, when i first got it switched on yesterday it was off to fully working in about 25 seconds, i’ve reloaded about 60gig onto the drives last night, i know this can slow things, but the prob is more a case of the pc not detecting there’es a window open on the desktop,
for eg,
i can right click on the desktop, i can click and open any icon on the desktop, but nothing on the start / menu bars, when a window opens, i can sometimes navigate it with the keyboard, but if i try with the mouse, it fades as if i’ve just clicked on another window, i can’t alter or close windows either, odd!!
i will phone the pc guy up later, but don’t need thhe pc down today, just wanna get on with some work!
cheers.

Hugh as high a resolution as possible would be best – also you may want to increase the refresh rate to a higher frequency so it scans faster and lessens screen flicker.
If the monitor is any good you should be able to adjust the screen geometry.
-
is it a wide screen tft? if it is you need to set it to its own resolution settings if you know what they are, just try different ones till it looks right mate.
Nick.

i think it’s a widescreen, job to know what is and isn’t these days, it’s a samsung monitor, not cheap! i’ll have a play about with it, or, thinking about it, i might pop the disc in that came with it 🙄
-
I have my 22" widescreen monitor set at 1680 x 1050.
As to the 2nd point, the gold one sounds like a DVI connection, you would use this instead of the standard VGA connection. Check the back of your computer to see if you have the same connection on there. DVI would be slightly better quality then the VGA.
This is what my tech guy says, I havn’t got a clue what it means!
-
The available modes should be displayed in your manual,
failing that in the properties on your monitor.
Play about with your aspect ratio till it looks right.
a high a resolution as you can will give best image quality and sharpness.if you have it set to 800×600 say, or 1600×1200 thats almost square and will display as such on a widescreen, you would need something like 1360×900 or similar, just play till its right if you cant find it in the manual or on the box.
-
all the samsung 22 wides seam to be 1680×1050 as stated, card must be set to that else squares are not squares as you see them.

hi guys,
i’m currently on 1280 x 960, seems ok but some of the clarity isn’t all i think it should be, i’ve just been going through some photo’s i took on the new phone cam (k850i) and the colours are absolutely mint, amazing colour, it’s just this internet screen, text looks a bit funny, blurry almost (it could be due to the fact i was down here til well gone 3am, and i’m still tired, but i dunno, there’s a few quirly things not quite right.
on another note, having said about when it’s started up, it won’t recognise the windows with the pointer, i’ve just discovered the same prob with corel, i can import, select, delete, stretch, etc, everything but move an object, it will select, but when i go to move it, it’s as if it isn’t there, even on fresh drawn shapes etc. this needs sorting quick as i’ve got another 4×4 that needs to be an ambulance by friday, sat out side 😕
any ideas on that one? i’ve been through corel options, reset to default (which it will be anyways), done the downloads, just annoying now.
cheers.
Hughps, switched off the monitor, disconected the monitor lead and left the dvi lead in, but it wouldn’t fire up, i’ll try it again when i restart the pc.
i’ve just realised how slow bluetooth is too, when i took 350 photo’s from the memory card on the camera (in card reader) ittook literally 3-5 seconds to transfer them to a file, the k850i has about 400 photo’s on it, and has been going for about 3hrs on bluetooth! i’ll plug it in next time!

I think it’s possible that you might need to make sure you have the most up to date drivers for your video card. Also I don’t know exactly if it works the same on a PC as the Mac (what I use), but your refresh rate also plays a big part of how your display functions. I had a problem before where I knew 100% positively that I had the right resolution, but where I was screwing up was I had the wrong refresh rate. I’ve also heard some people complain about the text looking blurry on the screen because they aren’t use to the copy being anti-aliased. I know there is a way to adjust the anti-aliasing in OS X and also a setting in FreeHand MX which lets you turn this on or off. Anyway, good luck with the problem Hugh. I hope you sort it out.
-
thank you, it’s only the internet which looks rubbish, everything else seems fine, images etc, just text , in fact, Corel was so clear when i zoomed in, i near fell of me chair with excitement!
the refresh rate is now on 72 i think, was on 65, 75 is the next and highest step, seems ok in that respect though, every other setting for colour, video etc is on max, the guys at the shop set everything up and installed all the drivers and updated any that needed it, so i should have all i need,
using Nvidea GeForce 8500 GT video / graphics card,

Bluetooth from a Sony Ericsson is faster than a cable.
Always had been, or mine always has been, usb is even slower stick with bluetooth -
What is ClearType?
ClearType is a subpixel rendering technology developed by Microsoft to improve your readability of text over LCD monitors (Such as Laptop screens or Flat Panel Screens). Sometimes ClearType can appear Blurry on CRT monitors. By default ClearType is turned on in Internet Explorer 7.How to Turn Off ClearType Feature in IE 7?

thanks dude, i’ll do that on internet explorer, though i only use it as a second browser if i need two hotmail or ebay accounts open at once, i’ll see if there’s a way in firefox to alter it too.
cheers guys.

ok, the screen is ok now, but i still have the problem with the windows not being movable, and the corel objects too,
it happens when i first switch on for about two to three minutes, i guess it’s still booting up in the background, but sometimes it does it in corel, any ideas before i go calling the computer shop to come out?
basically after booting up, or aafter a period of inactivity, 1/2hr or so, i can open windows from icons on the desktop, i can right click the screen and get options etc, but i can’t do anything with the windowss, unless i use the keyboard (bit hit and miss),
corel is more of a nuisance as i want to be able to move objects, i can make objects, select them, stretch them, etc, but cannot move them, once i click on them to drag them, they just unselect themselves and sit there.
thanks in advance.

Check the batteries are OK in the cordless mouse (if that’s what you have) and make sure the receiver is quite close.
-
hi mate, new cordless mouse / keyboard and batteries! the mouse works fine, it’s just the windows occasionally playing up. seems fine this morning 😕
thanks dude.
Hugh -
You must have left it in sleep mode so now it feels better :lol1:
-
hugh i think peter may be on to it there try you old plug in mouse, i had similar problems the other month. different mouse all well
chris
-
all seems well for the moment, if it does it again i’ll pop the other mouse in, i’ve half a dozen in a box here somewhere, but lord knows which work and don’t!
-
nope, not the mouse!!
what seems to wake it up again, is ctrl alt del, then it usually snaps out of it when the window is open, wierd. gonna call the people at the shop i think.

monitor – this must be set at 1680 x 1050.
as for the other issue it might be having some issue coming out of the power saving mode, you can change these settings by going to the power options icon in the control panel
Try setting your hard drive/system standby to never turn off.

woah, just went to 1600 x 1024 and it looked awful, text was small and blurrier than before!
re the power settings, i figured this might be the problem yesterday, i set it all to never turn off, no hibernate, no standby etc, might look further into that.
cheers.

Hugh, if you have a problem with web page viewing, try holding CNTRL and scrolling the mouse wheel to change text size.
It might have a default setting which is unsuitable.
So on a high display resolution it might set the text way too small and this will cure it. -
monitor – this must be set at 1680 x 1050. <<<<<< anything other than that will provide poor results, if you cant select this then something is wrong you may need to update you video drivers.

HI, i’m running the monitor from the n-videa GeForce 8500 graphics card, with the latest drivers installed, the max setting is only 1600×1024, which i think i mentioned above, the video card is more than enough to cope with the screen, when i set it to the max, the text is more blurry than before, and the text a lot smaller, is there a way to improve the text quality then ?
i tried the ctrl and scrolling the mouse but it did nothing but move the page up and down!
the only other option is to install the cd which came with the mnitor, maybe that will give me more options?
cheers.
Hugh -
hugh we really mean it the card res has to match the screen dot for dot else it will be blurry.
on the box it came in will be the res 16-1 1680 x 1050 some times its at the end of the list of res in the driver, because its a new standard. -
right, found it now, had to open the n-videa tool box, it wasn’t listed on the basic settings, was out there on it’s own as you all suggested. thank you.
re the prob with it not selecting things, i think that’s ok now, the manual makes it look like both cables to the monitor are needed, and it always selected the analogue, this time rather than switching the screen off and disconecting the analogue cable, i removed it and then re booted, things seem to be working just fine now, touch wood.
my only complaint….. i’m using firefox, and no matter what i try to do, i cannot make the text bigger, it looks tiny on this big monitor! maybe that’s just it, it’s the same as before but looks lost? i’ve tried the ctrl + mouse wheel, and while it alters it, it’s not really what i’m after! but it’ll do for now.
thanks again
Hugh
thanks again all,
-
Hugh, I use Firefox, and to make the text bigger I use Ctrl + Ctrl – to make smaller.
🙂

Hey Hugh when I need to adjust the font size in Firefox all I do is click Tools > Options > Content in there is a section where you can change the font type as well as size. Hope that helped.
-
thanks Barb and Steph,
i tried the option in tools but it really made no difference for some reason, however, barbs shortcuts of ctrl + / – works fine!
all sorted barring the non functioning window prob which is still intermittent,
by pressing ctrl cntrl del and then clicking on the window a couple of times, it wakes up again though, i’ve tried everything now so will call the pc shop in the morning.
thanks all for your help.

hi all,
seem to have cured it now, i went into the shop and explained the problems, it seems they have the same problem on their shop counter pc, but assumed it was a glitch due to using it as a bios system or something,
it would appear that the common link is the wireless keyboard / mouse set up used on both mine and the shop pc, they loaned me a cheap standard keyboard and mouse, and s far no further problems at all, other than me hating standard keyboards as i don’t hit the keys hard enough ad keep missing letters off! i’ve been used to nothing but laptop / soft touch keyboards for 4 years now, so got the soft touch one from the shop, this thing is like somehting from the victrian era! now i know what the prob is i’ll go and try another keyboard!
thanks again for all your help.
Hugh

If your getting a new mouse keyboard Hugh I would recommend the microsoft keyboard and wireless mouse even got a fingerprint reader on the keyboard so you don’t have to type in passwords just put finger tip on reader and it logs you on to websites. Wouldn’t be without mine now.

sounds expensive Steve!! i’ll ask how much at the shop,

Well I did mention the cordless setup ages ago but you said you had substituted the mouse and it wasn’t cured.
Again, make sure the transmitter is no more than a couple of feet away. -

Again, make sure the transmitter is no more than a couple of feet away.i tried the mouse, to no avail, but it would seem it’s the keyboard that’s the problem, not had a prob at all today (other than terrible spelling on this clunky keyboard). i like to gently caress my keyboard with my fingertips, not give my fingers a headache by keep smacking the big clunky keys!
anyways, transmitter. it was barely 12" away from the keyboard, and a max of 18" from the mouse. weird.
