whats the best method of removing prints from glass?
Posted by Peter Dee on 19 April 2008 at 11:11I have to remove some 2.3m x 900mm exterior prints from windows.
They have have been in place for 5 years and will have to be accessed with a cherry picker.
Anyone got any tips as to the best way to tackle the removal as I imagine sheet material is going to be hard to shift?Peter Dee replied 17 years, 8 months ago 9 Members · 14 Replies -

not an easy job to do especially if on cherry picker
blow torch at distance and lots of pulling power
oh an loads of white spirits to clean the glue that’s going to be left on the glass
best of luck with that 1

If they start breaking up, and are hard to remove, even with using a scraper, then nitromores paint remove (make sure you mask the frame first though)
I have used this before and it just melts the vinyl and glue in one go. by the time you have brushed it on the other end will be ready for removal
I cant see why it wouldnt work on a print, even if laminated…..

Cheers guys. It’s also a difficult one to give a price for not knowing how it will go.
I had a thought, as the glass is toughened, could the print be scored in to strips to make pulling off easier buy doing a 150mm strip at a time for instance?
I believe toughened glass won’t be affected by a scalpel blade? -
That’s exactly what I do – cut vertical strips about 5" wide. If you’re lucky it’ll come off clean.
If it does just break up use a proper window scraper, like a Harrison one. You can also use this to remove the glue, after soaking it in white spirits.

I did a widow that had been fitted for years, not even a scraper would remove it, if it is as bad as that one, and you wont know till you start, worth investing in a tin of Nitromorse, just in case,Get it from B & Q , if you dont need it you can always take it back.

just remove something very similar and had the pleasure of using some 3m graphic remover oh gosh how nice, apply by roller sit back 20-30mins and peal off did leave some glue but made the film as if it had been attacked with paint stripper but very safe
cant remember product number but if you need it i will pos -
Thanks for your replies. It sounds like a combination of methods.
Rich, the 3M stuff sounds interesting, who supplies it? -
We do a lot of these and find with older prints that scoring the vinyl with your kraft knife in 1 or 2 inch parallel lines…and using heaps of water from a sprayer .. allows a razor blade scraper to remove the strips. The water has a bit of a capillary action and stops the glue from going smeary – If you do have to rersort to solvents, then use water to remove the residual glue
hope this helps

hi mate I get mine from automotive refinishing shops but as its not a fast mover you may have to order it in.

I think Cherwell or Grafitpy do a similar product, in fact it’s much the same as nitromorse same principals anyway 🙄

3m system would get my vote too. . .as rich says. . brush it on. .. have a cuppa come back and it falls off (albeit a bit messy)
Its very good but make sure you wash everything down after. . . if left for any amount of time it really attacks most plastics and rubbers etc. . .
btw Rich if you ever need more, L.E. Wents (off tait Rd ) sell the 3m glue removal system.
I’m also looking to try this stuff from Wurth, but I think its more of an adhesive remover than total graphic removal system like the 3m Product !
